Wiesenthal Centre to Spanish Popular Party: “Expel Adolf Hitler Impersonator and Nazi-Saluting Officials”

In a letter to Spanish Partido Popular (PP) Secretary-General, Maria Dolores Cospedal, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, exposed Toni Rodriguez, the Party's Municipal Counselor (Concejal) for Marxuquera, in the Valencia county of Gandia, celebrating Halloween impersonating Adolf Hitler.

Samuels charged, “Rodriguez, apparently, first denied his disguise, then claimed it was not Hitler and finally exclaimed that 'as this was a private party I can dress as I wish'.”

The letter revealed, “In August 2013, Rodriguez’s colleague, Daniel Terrades, then Secretary-General of the Partido Popular’s young guard Nuevas Generacienes in Gandia, made the Hitler salute at a mausoleum for Franco’s soldiers who fell in the Civil War. It seems that a complaint was opened but led to no penalty. On the contrary, Terrades is now an official with Rodriguez in the city government.”

The Centre stressed that it “had worked closely with Partido Popular Honorary President, former Prime Minister Jose Aznar Lopez, on the presence of Nazi war criminals in Spain,” adding, “It respects the standing of the Partido Popular.”

Samuels argued, “Nevertheless, the behaviour of your officials in Gandia, if left untreated, will gravely damage the Partido Popular with the stain of Nazism which can spread widely, especially by contaminating youth through the social networks.”

The Centre offered to share its educational materials with the Party to contain this "virus".

Samuels urged the Secretary-General to, "Publicly condemn this behaviour and see that both Rodriguez and Terrades are expelled forthwith from your Party.”

En una carta dirigida a la Secretaria General del Partido Popular español, María Dolores Cospedal, el Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal, Dr. Shimon Samuels, divulgó la celebración de Halloween llevada a cabo por Toni Rodríguez, Concejal del partido por Marxuquera, en el distrito valenciano de Gandia, quien se disfrazó de Adolf Hitler para la ocasión.

Samuels puso de relieve que “aparentemente, Rodríguez negó en un primer momento haber escogido tal disfraz, luego dijo que no se trataba de Hitler para finalmente sostener que ‘por haberse tratado de una fiesta privada, podía disfrazarme como quisiera’”.

La carta reveló que “en agosto de 2013, un colega de Rodríguez, Daniel Terrades, quien en ese momento era el Secretario General de Nuevas Generaciones del Partido Popular en Gandia, realizó el saludo hitleriano ante un mausoleo en memoria de soldados franquistas caídos durante la Guerra Civil. Según entendemos, se formuló una denuncia pero no derivó en pena alguna. Por el contrario, Terrades es actualmente funcionario, junto con Rodríguez, en el gobierno de la ciudad”.

El Centro resaltó “el estrecho trabajo que realizamos con vuestro Presidente Honorario, el exPrimer Ministro José Aznar López, en relación con la presencia de criminales de guerra nazis en España”, y destacó asimismo “el respeto que guardamos por el prestigio de su partido”.

“Sin embargo, el comportamiento de vuestros funcionarios en Gandia – en caso de ser ignorado – podría dañar gravemente al Partido Popular al impregnarle la mancha del nazismo, que puede expandirse de modo amplio, en especial al contaminar a la juventud a través de las redes sociales”, argumentó Samuels.

El Centro ofreció compartir con el Partido Popular sus materiales educativos con vistas a contener este virus.
Samuels urgió a la Secretaria General a que “condene públicamente este comportamiento y a que ambos individuos, Rodríguez y Terrades, sean expulsados de manera inmediata de vuestro partido”.
