SWC Commends Argentina’s Cuyo University for its Adoption of IHRA Anti-Semitism Definition

Buenos Aires & Paris: Today, the University of Cuyo, Mendoza, adopted the IHRA Working Definition of Anti-Semitism, aimed at resolving past racist abuses on its campus.

In May 2019, through an open letter to the Rector of the National University of Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, the Wiesenthal Centre reported that a professor and a journalist were allegedly preparing campus based anti-Semitic activities.

The Rector decided at that time to order an investigation, and the Wiesenthal Center was requested to provide the background on which the complaint was based. The presentation stated that the reported behavior was to be found in the “Working Definition of Anti-Semitism”, of the 2016 International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) by consensus of its 31 member countries, including Argentina.

Dr. Ariel Gelblung, the Center´s Latin American Representative, said that “given that the Argentine legal system does not usually include definitions, all may now refer to what Argentina, as a full IHRA member, approved unanimously. This is indeed good news."

“The resolution ensures that University campuses are not to be the breeding ground for discrimination and incitement to hatred. We commend the University of Cuyo for this step and hope it may be a precedent for the Working Definition to be adopted by universities across the Americas,” concluded Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Center.

El Centro Wiesenthal Felicita a la Universidad de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, por ser Pionera en la Adopción de la Definición de Antisemitismo

Hoy, la Universidad de Cuyo, Mendoza, adoptó la Definición Práctica de IHRA (Alianza Internacional de Rememoración del Holocausto) de antisemitismo, para resolver cuestiones relacionadas con abusos racistas dentro de su ámbito.

En mayo de 2019, mediante una carta abierta al Rector de la Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina, el Centro Wiesenthal informó que un profesor y un periodista desarrollaban actividades antisemitas.

El Rector decidió en ese momento ordenar una investigación, y se solicitó al Centro Wiesenthal que proporcionara los antecedentes en los que se basaba la queja. La presentación declaró que los comportamientos informados se encuadraban en la "Definición Práctica de Antisemitismo", de la Alianza Internacional para la Rememoración del Holocausto (IHRA), aprobada en 2016 por consenso de sus 31 países miembros, incluida Argentina.

El Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro para América Latina, dijo que “dado que el sistema legal argentino no suele incluir definiciones, remitirse a lo que Argentina, como miembro pleno de IHRA, organismo internacional especializado en la materia, aprobó por unanimidad, es una buena noticia ".

“La resolución garantiza que los ámbitos universitarios no sean el caldo de cultivo para la discriminación y la incitación al odio. Elogiamos a la Universidad de Cuyo por este paso y esperamos que sea un precedente para que la definición de trabajo sea adoptada por las universidades de las Américas y sirva de alerta para evitar reincidencias", concluyó el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro.
