Mugabe Cancels Visit to Ecuador Following Wiesenthal Center Protest

Zimbabwe’s dictator, Robert Mugabe cancelled a scheduled trip to Ecuador, where he was to receive a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Civil Law from Bishop Walter Crespo Guarderas, self-declared head of “the Anglican Province of Ecuador”. Mugabe’s host has been linked with former Bishop of Harare, Dr. Nolbert Kunonga’s “Anglican Province of Zimbabwe”, and was charged, in 2001, with allegedly supplying arms to the FARC terrorist movement of Colombia.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center had expressed indignation at the planned visit to Quito, due to take place following the UN General Assembly in New York.

In a letter to Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patiño, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Wiesenthal Center Director for International Relations) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America) had noted that “Mugabe’s dictatorship has, for over three decades, set a record in human rights violations… his troops’ massacre of over 20,000 Matabele, in 1983-84, has been denounced as genocide and documented by the African Union”, adding, “Mr. Minister, lead the way in declaring this tyrant persona non grata throughout the Americas”.

“Investigate Mugabe’s host, Reverend Walter Crespo, for reported links with Zimbabwe’s oppressive system and publicly condemn this honorary doctorate award initiative”, had urged Samuels.

“Mugabe’s presence in Ecuador would offend human rights victims and whitewash such abuses in Latin America”, had added Widder.

Following its protest, the Center received an official letter from Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry stating that Mugabe had cancelled his “private visit” to that country.

“We construe from this diplomatic response that the tyrant is not welcome in Ecuador and hope that this sets a precedent throughout Latin America”, concluded Samuels and Widder

Mugabe canceló su visita a Ecuador luego de las protestas del Centro Wiesenthal

El dictador de Zimbabue, Robert Mugabe, canceló una visita que tenía en agenda a Ecuador, donde recibiría un Doctorado Honoris Causa en Derecho Civil de manos del obispo Walter Crespo, auto-declarado líder de la “Provincia Anglicana de Ecuador”. El anfitrión de Mugabe Crespo ha estado ligado a la “Provincia Anglicana de Zimbabue” del ex obispo de Harare, Nolbert Kunonga, y ha sido acusado en 2001 de proveer armas al grupo terrorista colombiano FARC.

El Centro Wiesenthal había expresado su indignación ante la eventualidad de esa visita, que estaba prevista a continuación de la Asamblea General de la ONU en Nueva York.

En una carta al Canciller ecuatoriano, Ricardo Patiño, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina) habían señalado que “durante más de tres décadas, la dictadura de Mugabe ha violado de manera sistemática los derechos humanos; la masacre de más de 20.000 Matabeles cometida por sus tropas en 1983 / 84 ha sido denunciada como un genocidio y se encuentra documentada por la Unión Africana”. La carta agregaba: “Sr. Ministro, asuma el liderazgo en declarar a este tirano como ‘persona no grata’ en territorio americano”.

Samuels había urgido que se investigaran “los antecedentes del anfitrión de Mugabe, el reverendo Walter Crespo debido a los vínculos que se le atribuyen con el régimen opresivo de Zimbabue, y se condenara públicamente la iniciativa de otorgarle un doctorado honorario”.

“La presencia de Mugabe en Ecuador sería un insulto a la sociedad ecuatoriana y una ofensa hacia las víctimas de abusos contra los derechos humanos en América Latina”, había agregado Widder.

Luego de su protesta, el Centro recibió una notificación oficial de la Cancillería ecuatoriana indicando que Mugabe había cancelado su “visita privada” a ese país.

“Interpretamos a partir de esta respuesta diplomática que este tirano no es bienvenido en Ecuador y anhelamos que lo ocurrido siente un precedente a lo largo de América Latina” concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
