Wiesenthal Center Denounces New Antisemitic Attack in Venzuela – Calls on OAS and its Member States to Condemn and Intervene

The Simon Wiesenthal Center denounced a new antisemitic attack in Caracas, defacing the walls of the Tiferet Israel synagogue with anti-Jewish graffiti. This was the same synagogue desecrated in January, 2009.

The attack took place when demonstrators passed by the synagogue leaving such inscriptions as “Zionists, out of our country”, a barred Star of David; the words “Usureros” (“Profiteers”), and “Peseteros” (“Misers”), with the final “s” replaced by a swastika; and “Star of David = Swastika”.

“This is a new incident in the long list of antisemitic attacks in Chavez’s Venezuela”, stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center. “Once again, the perpetrators are treated with impunity”, he added.

“Since the day of the attack (June 16), Chavez spent a great deal of time to defend his colleague and partner, the fraudulent Iranian President Ahmadinejad. He did not have a single minute to condemn a renewed attack against his country’s Jewish community,” said Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

The Center wrote to Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, urging him to “intervene in order to guarantee the safety of the Venezuelan Jewish community”. The letter is a further measure to the denunciations of the Center to the 39^th OAS General Assembly,  held four weeks ago in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

El Centro Wiesenthal denuncia nueva agresión antisemita en Venezuela – Exhorta a la comunidad hemisférica a repudiar – Urge la intervención de la OEA

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal denunció una nueva agresión antisemita en Caracas, cuando se conoció que las paredes externas de la sinagoga Tiferet Israel fueron decoradas con leyendas graffiti anti-judíos. Se trata de la misma sinagoga que fue profanada en enero de 2009.

El ataque se produjo cuando individuos que participaban en una manifestación que, en su recorrido, pasó por la sinagoga, donde pintaros consignas tales como “Fuera sionistas de nuestro país”; la Estrella de David tachada; la palabra “Usureros”, donde la “s” final es reemplazada por una cruz svástica; la palabra “Peseteros” (avaros), donde también se reemplaza la “s” final por la svástica; y otro en el que se ve “Estrella de David = Svástica”.

“Este incidente se suma a la extensa lista de agresiones antisemitas cometidas en Venezuela bajo el gobierno de Hugo Chávez”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal). “Una vez más, los atacantes resultaron impunes”, agregó.

“Desde el 16 de junio, cuando se produjo el ataque, el presidente Chávez dedicó tiempo y palabras para defender a su colega y socio, el fraudulento presidente iraní Ahmadinejad; pero no tuvo un instante para condenar un nuevo ataque contra la comunidad judía de su propio país”, dijo Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina del Centro).

Asimismo, a través de una carta, el Centro urgió al Secretario General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, a que “intervenga para que el gobierno de Venezuela tome medidas serias para confrontar el antisemitismo en ese país y garantizar la seguridad de la comunidad judía”. La carta da continuidad a las denuncias acerca de antisemitismo en Venezuela presentadas por el Centro Wiesenthal durante la reciente XXXIX Asamblea General de la OEA, reunida a comienzos de junio de 2009 en San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
