Wiesenthal Centre to US Embassy in Oman: "Shocked at US Support to Anti-Semitic Hatefest at Muscat International Book Fair"

In a letter to the United States Ambassador to Muscat, Oman, Greta Holtz, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre Director for International relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, lamented US participation and support to the Muscat International Book Fair (MIBF) - currently open to the public until 7 March - characterizing it "as a hothouse of antisemitic
hate."

The letter continued, "The US Embassy is apparently a regular participant:

'The embassy’s participation in MIBF is part of its programme to support mutual understanding and exchange...The embassy is honored to have participated in the fair every year since it was founded 18 years ago and looks forward to many more.'"

The Centre explained that it "annually monitors incitement to hate on display at international book fairs, thereby alerting the Frankfurt Fair authorities to publishers potentially in violation of their Fair contract and German law."

Samuels expressed outrage "at the volume of antisemitic texts on the bookshelves of the current Muscat Fair and shock that the U.S. Embassy's participation could be presented as, 'to support mutual understanding and exchange.'"

The letter listed (see below) "a tip of the iceberg selection. The numbers in the list correspond to 38 book covers in the attached zip file.  The gory intent to foment anti-Jewish violence is visually self-explanatory at a time of surging antisemitic terrorism."
