“In Frankfurt, our Centre awarded its '2014 Worst Offender Award' to the Qatari Stand. In Doha, 700,000 visitors, 25% of them schoolchildren were exposed to a vicious racism.”
“From this perspective, Mr. Minister, Doha is a very long way from Paris.”
Paris
In a letter to Qatari Culture Minister, Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, noted the press reports of his candidacy for election in 2017 as Director-General of UNESCO. Samuels called his attention to “a matter under the auspices of his Ministry that surely violates the principles of UNESCO : the antisemitic displays at the just closed Doha International Book Fair.”
The letter listed a tip of the iceberg selection of thirty-five screeds inciting to anti-Jewish violence, “albeit, exhibited by Egyptian publishers – ironically barred from the recent Cairo Book Fair – and Syrian houses under the guise of Lebanese addresses... These publishers will be reported to the Frankfurt authorities as potentially in violation of their auumn 2015 Book Fair contracts and German law.”
Samuels added, “Every year in Frankfurt, we name a 'Worst Offender'. Indeed, our 2014 award went to the Qatari stand for the sheer venom on display”, continuing, “the Doha Book Fair website – under your Patronage – proudly reports 700,000 visitors this year, of whom 25% were school children - now sadly exposed to a vicious racism.”
The Centre urged the Minister “to condemn the Doha Book Fair, remove your patronage and investigate and prosecute those responsible for sowing these seeds of xenophobia, violence and conflict in a world of growing antisemitic terrorism.”
“UNESCO's role is to serve, from Paris, as a beacon of respect and tolerance, stressing in its Charter: 'Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed'... From this perspective, Mr. Minister, Doha is a very long way from Paris.”
