Wiesenthal Centre Concerned Low Voter Turnout in EU Elections Will Empower Anti-Semitic Parties

Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations, Simon Wiesenthal Centre – Europe (SWC–E), has called on the Centre’s thousands of members across the continent to vote in the 4–7 June elections to the European Parliament (EP), being held in the 27 member-states of the European Union.

Dr. Samuels, along with Tomas Sandell, Finnish leader of the European Coalition for Israel (E.C.I) are helping to mobilize their constituencies to educate themselves about the issues and engage in dialogue with the candidates.

The leaders of both the SWC-E and the E.C.I. are greatly concerned at the alarming rise of anti-Semitism throughout Europe and the existential nuclear threat of Iran to the State of Israel.

In the past, low voter turnout has played into the hands of the British BNP, the French Front National and the newly established Anti-Zionist Party, the Greek LAOS and the Polish League of Families. These and their allies are openly anti-Semitic and some include convicted Holocaust deniers.

The E.C.I. has presented a series of questions on its website relating to EU-Israeli relations for each country in its national language, with replies from candidates uploaded continuously until the election dates.

In addition to anti-Semitism and Iran, questions address the E.U. dialogue with Hamas and/or Hezbollah; the free trade agreement with Israel; responses to boycott and other related issues.

On 6 May, 2009, the Wiesenthal Centre urged E.P. President, Hans-Gert Pöttering, to ban all parties founded to incite hatred against Muslims, Jews, Roma or any other target of religious, ethnic or any other form of discrimination.

Between 4 and 7 June, 736 members of the European Parliament will be elected by proportional representation to represent 500 million Europeans in the 27 member-states.

These are the largest transnational elections in the history of Europe.

Le Centre Wiesenthal exprime son inquiétude devant le risque de montée en puissance des partis antisémites dans le cas d’un faible taux de participation aux élections européennes.

Paris, le 22 mai 2009

Le Directeur du Centre Simon Wiesenthal – Europe (CSW-E), M. Shimon Samuels, a lancé un appel aux milliers de membres du Centre à travers le continent pour les inciter à voter lors des élections du Parlement européen (PE) qui se tiendront du 4 au 7 juin dans les 27 états membres de l’Union européenne.

M. Samuels et Tomas Sandell, leader finlandais de la Coalition Européenne pour Israël (CEI), se solidarisent pour mobiliser leurs électeurs afin qu’ils s’informent sur les enjeux et engagent un dialogue avec les candidats.

Les dirigeants du CSW-E et de la CEI sont très préoccupés par la montée inquiétante de l'antisémitisme dans toute l'Europe et par la menace existentielle que le nucléaire iranien fait peser sur l’Etat d’Israël.

Un faible pourcentage de participation servirait les intérêts des partis extrémistes, entre autre: le BNP britannique, le Front National français et le nouveau Parti Anti-Sioniste, le LAOS grec et la Ligue des familles polonaise. Ceux-ci et leurs alliés sont ouvertement antisémites et dans certains de ces partis se trouvent des négationnistes condamnés par la justice.

La CEI a mis en ligne sur son site web une série de questions relatives aux relations entre l’UE et Israël, pour chaque pays dans sa langue nationale, avec les réponses des candidats téléchargées en continu jusqu’aux dates des élections.

En plus du problème de l’antisémitisme et de l’Iran, les questions portent sur le dialogue avec le Hamas et/ou le Hezbollah; l’accord de libre échange avec Israël; les réponses au boycott, etc.

Le 6 mai 2009, le Centre Wiesenthal a demandé instamment au Président du Parlement européen, M. Hans-Gert Pöttering, d’interdire tout parti fondé sur l’incitation à la haine à l’encontre des Musulmans, des Juifs, des Roms ou de toute autre cible religieuse, ethnique ou de quelque autre forme de discrimination.

Entre le 4 et le 7 juin, 736 membres du Parlement européen seront élus à la proportionnelle pour représenter les 500 millions d’européens des 27 états membres.

Ce sont les plus importantes élections transnationales dans l’histoire de l’Europe.

Simon-Wiesenthal-Zentrum besorgt über geringe Wahlbeteiligung bei Europawahlen, die antisemitische Parteien stärken könnte

Dr Shimon Samuels, Direktor des Simon-Wiesenthal-Zentrums – Europa (SWC-E), ruft die 3,000 europäischen Mitglieder seiner Organisation dazu auf, bei den Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament, die vom 4. bis 7. Juni in den 27 Mitgliedsstaaten der Europäischen Union stattfinden werden, ihre Stimme abzugeben.

Gemeinsam mit dem finnischen Vorsitzenden der Europäische Koalition für Israel (EKI), Tomas Sandell, versucht Samuels, jüdische und christliche Wähler, die der jeweiligen Organisation nahe stehen, zu mobilisieren, sich mit den Wahlthemen auseinanderzusetzen und die zur Wahl stehenden Kandidaten zu befragen.

SWC-E und EKI sind sehr besorgt über den in ganz Europe wachsenden Antisemitismus und die nukleare Bedrohung der Existenz Israels durch den Iran.

Wahlenthaltung komme nur extremistischen Parteien zugute, wie der britischen BNP, dem Front National oder der neu gegründeten Antizionistischen Partei in Frankreich, dem griechischen LAOS, der polnischen Familienliga. Diese Parteien und ihre Verbündeten sind offen antisemitisch, manche zählen verurteilte Holocaustleugner zu ihren Mitgliedern.

EKI stellt auf seiner Internet-Seite Fragen in der jeweiligen Landessprache an die Kandidaten, in denen es um die Beziehungen zwischen der EU und Israel geht. Die eingehenden Antworten werden regelmässig veröffentlicht.

Neben Fragen zum Antisemitismus und zum Iran wurden auch solche zum Dialog der EU mit Hamas und Hisbollah, zu Freihandelsabkommen mit Israel, zur Reaktion auf Boykott-Forderungen gestellt.

Am 6 Mai 2009 hatte das Wiesenthal-Zentrum einen Aufruf an den Präsidenten des Europäischen Parlaments, Hans-Gert Pöttering, gerichtet, um zu erreichen, dass Parteien, die Moslems, Juden, Roma und andere zur Zielscheibe von Hass und Diskriminierung machen, von der Teilnahme an den Europa-Wahlen ausgeschlossen werden.

Bei der Abstimmung vom 4. bis 7. Juni werden 736 Europa-Parlamentarier gewählt, die anteilsmässig die 500 Millionen europäischer Bürger in 27 EU-Staaten vertreten.

Es handelt sich hierbei um die grössten transnationalen Wahlen in der Geschichte Europas.
