Wiesenthal Centre Calls on Uruguay to Expel Iranian Diplomat

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre called on Uruguay Foreign Minister, Luis Almagro Lemes, to expel Iranian Commercial Attaché Hojjatollah Soltani (pictured), for officially deleting from history six million Holocaust victims.

Soltani contemptuously claimed that “the Nazis killed two millions, four, six… there are different figures. They call it Holocaust… May be thousands of Jews were killed, but millions… that is a lie…”

In a letter to Minister Almagro Lemes, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Centre) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America), commended the Uruguayan government’s rapid condemnation in noting that Uruguay is home to an important number of Holocaust survivors.

“Iran demonstrates genocidal intent as the only state to deny the Holocaust as policy. Its nuclear designs transmit a clear message: ‘there was no Holocaust, let’s make it a reality.’ Tehran brought its terror to the continent at the AMIA Jewish Centre in Buenos Aires. Now it exports its genocidal hate to neighbouring Montevide,” stated Samuels.

“Soltani offended not only the memory of the Nazis’ murdered victims, he has defamed Uruguay as the Latin American pioneer in erecting Holocaust memorials,” added Widder.

“Uruguay’s expulsion of this Iranian abuser of its tolerance and hospitality would set a historic precedent across the Americas,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal urgió al Canciller uruguayo, Luis Almagro Lemes, a que expulse al Encargado de Negocios iraní en Montevideo, Hojjatollah Soltani, por haber borrado oficialmente de la historia a seis millones de víctimas del Holocausto.

Durante una conferencia pública, Soltani manifestó de manera desdeñosa que “los nazis mataron a dos millones, cuatro, seis… hay distintas cifras. Lo llamaron Holocausto… Tal vez asesinaron a unos miles de judíos, pero esa cifra de millones… es una mentira…”En una carta al Canciller Almagro Lemes, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), reconocieron la reacción de su gobierno, que destacó que Uruguay es hoy el hogar de un importante número de sobrevivientes del Holocausto.“Irán demuestra sus pretensiones genocidas al ser el único Estado que niega el Holocausto como parte de su política. Sus planes nucleares transmiten un mensaje claro: ‘no hubo un Holocausto, hagámoslo realidad’. Teherán llevó su terror al continente con el atentado contra la AMIA, en Buenos Aires. Ahora exporta su odio genocida a la vecina ciudad de Montevideo”, señaló Samuels.

“Soltani ofendió no sólo la memoria de millones de individuos asesinados por el nazismo; también ha difamado a Uruguay, un pionero en la instalación en América Latina de monumentos en recordación de las víctimas del Holocausto, como el que se encuentra en la popular rambla de Montevideo”, agregó Widder.

“La expulsión de este individuo, que ha abusado de la tolerancia y la hospitalidad de Uruguay, sentaría un precedente histórico a través de las Américas”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
