Wiesenthal Centre Congratulates Newly Elected El Salvador President and Looks Forward to Working with Him

Last week El Salvador voted, as its next president, 37 year-old Nayib Bukele, who will take office in June.

Bukele is descended from a Catholic grandmother born in Bethlehem and a Greek Orthodox grandfather born in Jerusalem. His father converted to Islam while his wife has a Jewish background.

Bukele has referred to Israel as an "example of progress" after his official visit last year while he was Mayor of San Salvador.

"Latin America is eager to endorse peace, progress and coexistence. We hope that the President-elect will be more active to sway the Latin America and Caribbean Group," said Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representative of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Latin America.

These include the findings of the assassination of Alberto Nisman, the Argentine Prosecutor, on Iranian and Hizbollah presence in the Chavez-Maduro Venezuela and its ALBA group neighbours."

El Centro Wiesenthal Felicita al Recién Electo Presidente de El Salvador y Espera Poder Trabajar en Conjunto

La semana pasada, El Salvador votó como su próximo presidente a Nayib Bukele, de 37 años, quien asumirá el cargo el próximo junio.

Desciende de una abuela católica nacida en Belén y de un abuelo ortodoxo griego nacido en Jerusalén. Su padre se convirtió al Islam y su esposa tiene origen judío.

El año pasado, luego de una visita oficial a Israel en su carácter de Alcalde de San Salvador, se refirió a dicho país como un "ejemplo de progreso" .

"América Latina está ansiosa por respaldar los procesos de paz, progreso y coexistencia. Esperamos que el Presidente electo se incline más activamente por promoverlos en el seno del Grupo de América Latina y el Caribe", dijo el Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro Simon Wiesenthal para América Latina.
