Wiesenthal Center Urges President of Uruguay: "Act firmly to keep the Middle East out of the Américas"

In a letter to Uruguayan President, Tabaré Vázquez, the Wiesenthal Center deplored the apparent Jihadist stabbing to death of a Jewish merchant cossing the street in the provincial city of Paysandú.

"The murderer's cry of Allah-hu- Akbar (Allah is Great) points to the transplantation of Islamist terrorism from the Middle East to Latin America ... From the knife to the bullet to the bomb is the terrorist route exposed by the assassinated AMIA atrocity Prosecutor,Alberto Nisman...Gaza has no place in Uruguay," stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Center's Director for International Relations.

Dr. Ariel Gelblung, the Center’s Latin American Representative, argued that "the deliberate stabbing attack of a Jew must be investigated as a hate crime whose anti-Semitic intent aggravates the weight of the penalty. It should also create a bond of sympathy between Uruguay, Israel, France and the community of other countries victim to terror."

"We urge the Uruguayan authorities to act firmly against Jew-hatred and related targets of bigotry. Indeed, a hemispheric approach is necessary to keep the Middle East out of the Americas," concluded the Center officials.

El Centro Wiesenthal al Presidente de Uruguay: “El asesinato a cuchillazos de un judío en Paysandú al grito de Allah-hu-Akhbar (Allah es grande) da señales de trasplante del terrorismo islámico de Medio Oriente a América Latina”

“Del cuchillo a la bala, y desde allí a la bomba es la ruta terrorista que denunciara el asesinado fiscal del atentado a la Amia Alberto Nisman… Gaza no tiene lugar en Uruguay”


En una carta al Presidente de la República Oriental del Uruguay, Dr. Tabaré Vázquez, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó el asesinato a cuchillazos cometido contra un comerciante judío en plena vía pública en la Ciudad de Paysandú, por un presunto jihadista.

“El grito de Ala-hu-Akbar (Ala es el más Grande) del asesino da señales de trasplante del terrorismo islámico de Medio Oriente a América Latina… Del cuchillo a la bala, y desde allí a la bomba es la ruta terrorista que denunciara el asesinado fiscal del atentado a la Amia Alberto Nisman… Gaza no tiene lugar en Uruguay”, estableció el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro.

El Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante para América Latina declaró que “el apuñalamiento deliberado a un judío debe ser investigado como un crimen de odio cuya intención antisemita debe agravar el peso de la pena. Además, debería crear un lazo de empatía entre Uruguay, Israel, Francia y la comunidad de otros países víctimas de terror.”

“Urgimos a las autoridades uruguayas a actuar con firmeza contra los ataques de odio antijudío y otros objetivos de los fanáticos. Insistimos en la necesidad de un enfoque hemisférico para mantener Medio Oriente fuera de las Américas”, concluyeron los funcionarios del Centro.
