Wiesenthal Center to Colombia Senate: "Do Not Succumb to BDS Nazi-style Pressure"

Buenos Aires, February 24, 2016

The Wiesenthal Center urged the President of the Colombian Senate, Luis Fernando Velasco Chaves, "to resist a campaign by the international BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) to block ratification of the Free Trade Agreement signed in 2013 between the governments of Colombia and Israel."

The appeal noted that "under the pretense of Palestinian solidarity, BDS groups intervene against the national interests of their countries to harm individuals and companies for associating with the State of Israel or its Jewish and non-Jewish supporters", continuing, "Their methods include the destruction of imports, hampering current contracts, targetting cultural, academic and media expression, while threatening free speech which differs from their antisemitic text."

The Center stressed that "that Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States and last week the City of Paris have begun to take measures against this pernicious movement in declaring BDS political extortion illegal, just as it violates the freedom of commerce provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO) ".

Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Wiesenthal Center Representative for Latin America, called on the Bogota Senate "to act in the interests of the Colombian people in ratifying the Free Trade Agreement negotiated with Israel and not succumb to BDS foreign intervention".

El Centro Wiesenthal instó al Presidente del Senado de Colombia, Luis Fernando Velasco Chaves, "a ignorar la campaña del movimiento internacional BDS (Boicot, Desinversión, Sanciones) que pretende impedir la ratificación del Tratado de Libre Comercio suscripto entre los gobiernos de Colombia e Israel en 2013 ".

La petición advierte que "bajo el pretexto de la solidaridad con Palestina, grupos del BDS actúan contra de los intereses nacionales haciendo daño a personas y empresas por asociarse con el estado de Israel o sus partidarios tanto judíos como no judíos ", continúa, “sus métodos incluyen la destrucción de mercaderías, la obstrucción de cumplimientos de contratos, el impedir expresiones culturales, artísticas, académicas o periodísticas, amenazando la libertad de expresión en tanto difiera de su texto antisemita ".

El Centro enfatizó que "Canadá, el Reino Unido, los Estados Unidos y, desde la semana pasada la Ciudad de París, han comenzado a tomar medidas en contra de este pernicioso movimiento al declarar ilegal la extorsión política del BDS, por considerar que actúa en violación a las disposiciones de la libertad de comercio de la Organización Mundial del Comercio (OMC) ".

El Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro Wiesenthal para América Latina, instó al Senado de Bogotá "a actuar en interés del pueblo colombiano ratificando el Tratado de Libre Comercio suscripto con Israel y a no ceder ante el BDS y sus intenciones ajenas por competo al tratado en cuestión".
