Wiesenthal Center to Assist Investigation Against Former Arrow Cross Youth Leader
Budapest The Simon Wiesenthal Center announced it would assist Hungarian judicial authorities in their ongoing investigation of former Arrow Cross youth leader Lajos Polgar, who is currently living in Melbourne, Australia.
In a meeting today between the Center’s chief Nazi-hunter, Israel director Dr. Efraim Zuroff, and Dr. Richard Szoboszlai, Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Budapest and the attorneys handling the genocide investigation against Polgar opened after submissions made by Dr. Zuroff, it was agreed that the Center would launch a search for Hungarian Jewish Holocaust survivors who might be able to provide testimony regarding crimes committed at the Arrow Cross headquarters in Budapest, which Polgar was in charge of from mid-October 1944.
Later, at a press conference in Budapest, Dr. Zuroff said that the Center would be concentrating its efforts in Israel, Australia and the United States, where the largest number of survivors from Budapest had emigrated after World War II. He also called upon the local Jewish community to assist in the search.
