On the eve of Venezuela’s entry into the MERCOSUR (South American Common Market), the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged founding governments; Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, to urge Venezuela’s renewal of diplomatic relations with the Israel.

In letters to Foreign Ministers Héctor Timerman (Argentina), Antonio Patriota (Brazil) and Luis Almagro Lemes (Uruguay), Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America), noted, “Among its external agreements, the MERCOSUR has a prosperous Free Trade Agreement with Israel. The entire region can therefore only gain if the entry of the new member were to mark a normalization between Caracas and Jerusalem.”

“Chavez’ entry into the MERCOSUR as a front for Tehran endangers the entire bloc. The most convincing divestment of his Iranian agenda would be Venezuela’s renewal of relations with Israel,” stated Samuels.

“The MERCOSUR can provide the ideal framework for the reestablishment of a relationship which was unilaterally ruptured by by Chávez in January, 2009,” added Widder.

Centro Wiesenthal: “El MERCOSUR puede obtener un destacado logro diplomático al promover que su flamante miembro, Venezuela, renueve relaciones diplomáticas con Israel”

Ante la incorporación de Venezuela como nuevo miembro del MERCOSUR, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal formuló un llamamiento a gobiernos fundadores del bloque -Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay– para que alienten el restablecimiento de las relaciones diplomáticas de Venezuela con Israel.

En cartas a los cancilleres Héctor Timerman (Argentina), Antonio Patriota (Brasil) y Luis Almagro Lemes (Uruguay), el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), señalaron que “entre sus convenios extra-bloque, el MERCOSUR mantiene un fructífero Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) con Israel. Toda la región puede, en consecuencia, obtener beneficios si el ingreso del nuevo integrante sirve para establecer una normalización entre Caracas y Jerusalem”

“El ingreso de Chávez al MERCOSUR como fachada para Teherán pone en riesgo a todo el bloque. El paso más convincente para deligarse de la agenda iraní sería la renovación de los lazos entre Venezuela e Israel”, manifestó Samuels.

“El MERCOSUR puede brindar un encuadre apropiado para que las relaciones entre Venezuela e Israel, interrumpidas de manera unilateral por Chávez en enero de 2009, se restablezcan”, agregó Widder.
