Wiesenthal Center Presence Helps Keep Focus of Major International Conference of Environmental Issues, Not Israel-Bashing

The Simon Wiesenthal Center was the only Jewish NGO participating at the Latin American – Caribbean Prepcom for UN Rio + 20 Summit on Sustainable Development
in Santiago. The meeting aimed at a regional consensus on environmental issues for the upcoming United Nations Rio + 20 Summit on Sustainable Development, to be held in Rio de Janeiro in June, 2012.

"We were present at the Johannesburg 2002 Summit, where we exposed such anti-Semitic attacks as the targeting of Keren Kayemeth (the Jewish National Fund) as ‘a Zionist vector for appropriation of Palestinian land," or blaming Israel for allegedly ‘destroying ancient olive trees, thus committing ecocide against the Palestinian people," noted Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

"We had written to all participating NGOs urging them to keep to the agenda of biodiversity, water, afforestation rather than being hijacked for anti-Zionism. It is gratifying that this meeting remained focused on the environment. Nonetheless, propositions by some NGOs for the creation of an International Environmental Court, could establish a new tool for singling out and attacking Israel," added Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America and the Center’s delegate at the Santiago Prepcom.

La presencia del Centro Wiesenthal previene el antisionismo en la Conferencia para América Latina y el Caribe Preparatoria para la Cumbre Rio + 20 de Naciones Unidas sobre Desarrollo Sustentable

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal fue la única organización judía participante en la Conferencia para América Latina y el Caribe Preparatoria para la Cumbre Rio + 20 de Naciones Unidas sobre Desarrollo Sustentable, reunida en Santiago de Chile. Este encuentro tuvo como propósito arribar a un consenso regional con vistas a la cumbre ambiental convocada para junio de 2012 en Rio de Janeiro.

"Estuvimos presentes en la Cumbre ambiental de 2002, en Johannesburg, donde expusimos los ataques antisemitas contra el Keren Kayemet (el Fondo Nacional Judío), acusado de ser ‘el vector del sionismo para apropiarse de las tierras palestinas’, y las acusaciones contra Israel por la supuesta destrucción de antiguos olivos, y el crimen de ‘ecocidio’", señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.

"Habíamos escrito a las ONGs participantes, instándolos a defender la agenda de la biodiversidad, el cuidado del agua, la forestación, y evitar que la reunión fuera secuestrada para promover el antisionismo. Nos gratifica que esta reunión se mantuvo enfocada en los temas ambientales. Sin embargo, las propuestas de algunas ONGs para la creación de un Tribunal Ambiental Internacional, podrían convertirse en una nueva herramienta para singularizar y atacar a Israel", agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina y delegado del Centro para la conferencia en Santiago.
