Wiesenthal Center Mourns Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner’s Passing – Extends Condolences to Widow, President Cristina Kirchner, and Family

The Simon Wiesenthal Center mourns the passing of Nestor Kirchner, who between 2003 and 2007 served as President of Argentina.

During his presidency, he called for the investigation of the AMIA Jewish Center bombing in 1994; he acknowledged the Argentine State’s cover up at the OAS Inter-American Human Rights Commission; he ordered the opening of intelligence files on AMIA; he reinforced the Special Investigation Unit and was the first Argentine President to denounce Iran’s complicity in that attack which killed 85 people.

In 2003, soon after taking office, Kirchner received a Wiesenthal Center delegation composed of Rabbi Abraham Cooper (Associate Dean), Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations), Fernando Sokolowicz (President of the Latin American Board) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America). On that occasion, Kirchner said that, “the AMIA bombing was our 9/11.”

President Kirchner will be remembered for his decision to reopen judicial procedures against human rights violators during the Junta’s dictatorship.
The Wiesenthal Center extends its condolences to President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, her children Máximo and Florencia, and all the family.

El Centro Wiesenthal lamenta el fallecimiento del ex presidente Néstor Kirchner – Hace llegar sus condolencias a la presidenta Cristina Fernández de Kirchner y su familia

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal lamenta el fallecimiento de Néstor Kirchner, quien fuera presidente de Argentina entre 2003 y 2007.

Durante su presidencia, Néstor Kirchner favoreció el avance de la investigación del atentado terrorista contra la AMIA, asumió la responsabilidad del Estado argentino en su encubrimiento ante la Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos de la OEA, ordenó la desclasificación de la información de inteligencia para ponerla a disposición de la justicia, fortaleció la Unidad Fiscal AMIA y fue el primer presidente argentino en señalar ante la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas la responsabilidad de Irán en ese ataque que provocó la muerte de 85 personas.

A poco de asumir su presidencia, en 2003, Kirchner recibió a una delegación del Centro Simon Wiesenthal integrada por el rabino Abraham Cooper (Decano Adjunto), el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales), Fernando Sokolowicz (Presidente del Comité Latinoamericano) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), ante quienes señaló que “el ataque contra la AMIA fue nuestro 11 de septiembre”.

El presidente Kirchner será recordado por el impulso que dio a los juicios contra responsables de violaciones contra los derechos humanos durante la última dictadura militar.
