Wiesenthal Center Denounces Anti-Semitic Attack Against Chabad Rabbi in Rosario, Argentina

On Sunday, June 9, while he was returning home, Rabbi Sholomo Tawil was attacked by three men in the center of Rosario, Argentina. After verbal attacks and trampling on his hat, the attackers began to beat the Rabbi until bystanders intervened.

"We express solidarity with Rabbi Tawil and his family and are relieved that he survived this savage attack, which was clearly antisemitic. His Jewish garb marked him as him a target for the perpetrators, stated Drs. Shimon Samuels and Ariel Gelblung,respectively, Director for International Relations and Representative for Latin America of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

"After a series of similar events over recent months in Buenos Aires, we urge the authorities to identify and arrest the attackers. Their sentence must reflect the egregious circumstances of a hate crime. Procrastination will be viewed as an encouragement to racists and antisemites across Argentina and the Americas," Wiesenthal officials continued.

"In addition, we are urging Luis Almagro, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS) to condemn these assaults on Jews as a first step in his endorsement, last week, of the IHRA (International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance) Definition of Antisemitism," Wiesenthal Center officials concluded.

El Centro Wiesenthal Repudia el Ataque Antisemita contra el Rabino Shlomo Tawil de Jabad Rosario, Argentina

El domingo 9 de junio, mientras regresaba a casa, el rabino Sholomo Tawil fue atacado por tres hombres en el centro de Rosario, Argentina.

Después de ataques verbales y pisotear su sombrero, comenzaron a golpearlo hasta que intervinieron los transeúntes.

"Expresamos nuestra solidaridad con el rabino Tawil y su familia, aliviados de haber sobrevivido a este ataque salvaje que fue claramente antisemita.

Su atuendo judío lo marcó como un objetivo para los perpetradores. Después de una serie de eventos similares en los últimos meses en Buenos Aires, instamos a las autoridades de Rosario a identificar y detener a los atacantes.

Su sentencia debe reflejar las agravantes circunstancias de los delitos de odio ... La dilación será vista como un estímulo para los racistas y antisemitas en Argentina y las Américas ".
