Cochabamba, Bolivia, June 3, 2012

The Wiesenthal Center denounced the Venezuelan-led ALBA bloc “Defense School ”, opened in May, 2011 in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia , as a threat to Western hemispheric security. The Centre holds consultative status at the Organization of American States (OAS) and is attending its 42nd General Assembly, from 2 to 5 June, in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

In a dialogue with OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, Sergio Widder (SWC’s Director for Latin America and its delegate to the OAS General Assembly) stated:

“We are in Cochabamba, one hour flight away from Santa Cruz de la Sierra , where the School of Defense of the ALBA bloc was opened a year ago by a fugitive from Argentine justice, Iranian Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi, sought by INTERPOL for his implication in the Buenos Aires AMIA – Jewish Center bombing.”

"Six Bolivians were among the 85 murdered in that terrorist attack: David Barriga, Erwin García Tenorio, Rimar Salazar Mendoza, Eugenio Vela Ramos, Juan Vela Ramos, Adhemar Zárate Loayza."

"Mr. Secretary General, our Centre calls on the OAS to launch an urgent enquiry into the Iranian role and its ties to terrorism at this military installation may endanger security in the Americas.”

Secretary General Insulza encouraged the Center to work further on this issue with the OAS Secretariat.

El Centro Wiesenthal denuncia la “Escuela de Defensa” del bloque ALBA en Bolivia como un riesgo para la seguridad hemisférica – Urge a la OEA a que investigue posibles nexos con el terrorismo

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal denunció la Escuela de Defensa del bloque ALBA (Alternativa Bolivariana de las Américas), inaugurada en mayo de 2011 en Santa Cruz de la Sierra, como una amenaza para la seguridad hemisférica. La denuncia se efectuó en el marco de la 42ª Asamblea General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), reunida en Cochabamba entre el 2 y el 5 de junio.

Durante un Diálogo con el Secretario General de la OEA, José Miguel Insulza, Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina del Centro Wiesenthal y su delegado a la Asamblea General), manifestó:

“Nos encontramos en Cochabamba, a una hora de vuelo de Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Allí funciona desde hace un año la Escuela de Defensa del ALBA, inaugurada por un prófugo de la justicia argentina, el Ministro de Defensa iraní Ahmad Vahidi, buscado por INTERPOL debido a su involucramiento en el ataque terrorista contra la AMIA en Buenos Aires.

En ese ataque fueron asesinadas 85 personas, entre ellos 6 ciudadanos bolivianos: David Barriga, Erwin García Tenorio, Rimar Salazar Mendoza, Eugenio Vela Ramos, Juan Vela Ramos, Adhemar Zárate Loayza.

Sr. Secretario General, nuestro Centro hace un llamamiento para que la OEA lleve adelante una investigación urgente acerca del rol de Irán y de los posibles nexos con el terrorismo en esta academia militar, que pueden poner en riesgo la seguridad en las Américas”.

El Secretario General Insulza alentó al Centro Wiesenthal a continuar trabajando este asunto de manera directa con el Secretariado de la OEA.
