Wiesenthal Center Condemns Regional Police Apathy in Patagonian Pogrom – Calls for Immediate Federal Arrest for Attackers

In a letter to the President of the Argentine National Institute Against Discrimination (INADI), Pedro Mouratian, (pictured at a meeting with Sergio Widder last week the Simon Wiesenthal Center requested immediate action to punish the assailants who led an anti-Semitic attack against Onda Azul Hostel in Lago Puelo (Province of Chubut, Argentina).

The Center stressed that “the aggressors broke in with firearms, chanting ‘f-ing Jews, you want to take over Patagonia’ –inspired by the Protocols style Argentine libel ‘Andean Plan’ which claimed that ‘Zionists are planning to establish a new Jewish State in Argentina’s Patagonia. When police officers arrived, the attackers accused them of ‘defending these Jews’”. They, reportedly, took no further action.

“We cannot disassociate this attack from the boycott campaign against Israeli tourists launched by a Regional Committee in Solidarity with Palestine which we denounced last December in neighboring El Bolsón. Once again, the spurious guise of ‘anti-Zionism’ is a pretext to incite to Jew-hatred wherever”, stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center (see http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=8952831&ct=14409771#.VME3bUeG95I).

“We are in contact with the hostel’s owner, Yoav Pollac, who confirmed all the details, adding that they have CCTV videos documenting the attack. He was relieved to have received the solidarity of the overwhelming majority of the local population. Nevertheless, Pollac has decided to close the hostel until security can be guaranteed. As a byproduct, this situation has a negative impact on the local economy, as an estimated 5.000 people stayed at Onda Azul each year. In this case, racism is not only immoral, but also detrimental for the region’s development,” added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

The Center’s officials demanded that the Anti-Discrimination Law be applied in this case and that INADI joins the request for safety, so that the hostel can re-open.

“The hatemongers have been identified; only the intervention of the Federal authorities can ensure their arrest,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Wiesenthal lamenta la débil reacción policial en un ataque al estilo ‘pogrom’ en la Patagonia – Urge a autoridades federales a que impulsen el arresto de los agresores

En una carta al Interventor del Instituto Nacional contra la Discriminación (INADI), Pedro Mouratian, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal pidió que se tomaran acciones para castigar a los responsables del ataque antisemita contra el Hostel Onda Azul de la localidad de Lago Puelo (provincia de Chubut).

El Centro subrayó que “los agresores irrumpieron violentamente con armas de fuego y acompañaron su accionar con consignas antisemitas tales como ‘judíos de mierda’ o acusaciones de que ‘vienen a ocupar la Patagonia’, en línea con el conocido panfleto antijudío ‘Plan Andinia’. Cuando llegaron agentes de policía, los agredieron y acusaron de ‘defender a estos judíos’”. Según se ha informado, las fuerzas policiales se mostraron impotentes.

“No podemos desvincular estas agresiones de la campaña de boicot contra turistas israelíes promovida por el Comité Comarcal de Solidaridad con Palestina, de la cercana localidad de El Bolsón (Provincia de Río Negro). Este incidente es un nuevo ejemplo de cómo la falsa apariencia del ‘antisionismo’ es apenas un pretexto para incitar al odio y la intolerancia contra los judíos en cualquier lugar”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal (ver http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=8952831&ct=14409771#.VME3bUeG95I).

“Estamos en contacto con el dueño del hostel, Yoav Pollac, quien confirmó toda la información y agregó que cuenta con videos de circuito cerrado que documentan los hechos. También nos dijo que se sintió reconfortado por las manifestaciones de solidaridad por parte de la mayoría de los vecinos de Lago Puelo. Sin embargo, Pollac ha resuelto cerrar su hostel hasta tanto cuente con garantías de seguridad. Esta situación genera, además, un impacto negativo para la economía local, dado que por Onda Azul pasaban unas 5.000 personas por año. En este caso, el racismo no es sólo inmoral, sino también perjudicial para el desarrollo de la región”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

Los directivos del Centro reclamaron que el INADI promueva que la causa judicial se encuadre dentro del marco de la Ley Antidiscriminatoria y se sume a la exigencia de garantías para que el hostel pueda continuar con su actividad de manera normal.

“Los agresores culpables están identificados; la intervención de autoridades federales debe asegurar que se los arreste”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
