Wiesenthal Center Condemns Union Leader Luis Barrionuevo for Contemptuous Reference to Argentine Minister of Economy as “the little Jew boy” (a colloquial translation of “Rusito”, Little Russian) – Urges an Immediate Apology

The Simon Wiesenthal Center slammed trade union leader Luis Barrionuevo, who referred to the Argentine Minister of Economy, Axel Kicillof, “the little Jew boy”.

During a radio interview, Barrionuevo justified yesterday’s general strike, alleging that “the little Jew boy does not have an answer”. Alerted by the show host, Ernesto Tenembaum, that the slur was offensive, Barrionuevo justified it by saying: “that’s how his cabinet colleagues refer to him”.

“The use of such language referring to the fact that Kicillof is Jewish, particularly in the framework of a union protest, constitutes incitement and puts the Jewish community at risk. Even if his colleagues call him that way, and even if Kicillof has no objections to that, such use in current circumstances is totally out. It is important that the workers who were protesting yesterday against the government make sure that their claims must not be tainted by racist language. It is surprising that, after admitting that the slur was offensive, Barrionuevo persisted in using it. Therefore, it was deliberate,” stated, Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

“We urge Barrionuevo to publicly and immediately apologize. Failure to do so can be interpreted as an endorsement of hatred against the Jewish community,” he concluded.

El Centro Wiesenthal condena la referencia ofensiva al Ministro de Economía argentino como “el rusito” – Exhorta a una disculpa pública por parte del sindicalista Luis Barrionuevo

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal criticó al sindicalista Luis Barrionuevo, quien se refirió despectivamente al Ministro de Economía argentino, Axel Kicillof, llamándolo “el rusito”.

Durante una entrevista radiofónica, Barrionuevo justificó la huelga general del 31 de marzo alegando que “el rusito no tiene respuesta”. Consultado por el periodista Ernesto Tenembaum acerca de ese apelativo, Barrionuevo admitió que “es peyorativo”; sin embargo, se justificó alegando que así lo llaman sus propios colegas de gabinete.

“Utilizar un lenguaje ofensivo aludiendo al hecho que Kicillof es judío, en particular en el marco de una protesta gremial, constituye incitación y pone en riesgo a la comunidad judía. Aún si sus colegas lo llaman así en privado, y aún si el propio Kicillof no pone reparos, su uso en estas circunstancias está totalmente fuera de lugar. Es importante que los obreros que se sumaron a la huelga y a la protesta contra el gobierno tengan en claro que sus reclamos no deben contaminarse con el lenguaje discriminatorio. Es sorprendente que aún después de admitir que era un apodo peyorativo, Barrionuevo insistiera en utilizarlo. Fue un uso deliberado”, señaló Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

“Urgimos a Barrionuevo a retractarse públicamente de manera inmediata. De no hacerlo, podremos presumir que tuvo la intención de promover la violencia contra la comunidad judía”, concluyó.
