Wiesenthal Center Condemns Trivialization of the Holcaust by Syrian President During Visit to Argentina

The Wiesenthal Center condemned comments made by the Syrian President, Bashar Al Assad, to a group of journalists during a recent visit to Argentina: “you can say there were 6 million, or 10 million Jews murdered, I do not know because I do not have precise information (…) I do not deny the Jewish Holocaust, but it might be exaggerated”, said Al Assad”, (http://www.diarioperfil.com.ar/edimp/0483/articulo.php?art=22749&ed=0483). “President Assad’s totalitarian regime violates individual and civil liberties and human rights. His offensive comments about the Holocaust parallel those of his partner and co-sponsor of terrorism and antisemitism, Iranian Presient Ahmadinejad. In view of Argentina’s measures to face its post-WWII welcome to Nazi war criminals, we urge the authorities to repudiate this diplomatic insult by Assad to his Argentine hosts,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center. “The Syrian hereditary dictatorship provided a safe haven for one of the biggest Nazi criminals, Alois Brunner, who was Adolf Eichmann’s second in command for the implementation of the ‘Final Solution’.
