Wiesenthal Center Commends Fidel Castro’s Denunciation on Antisemitism – Urges He Now Influence Chávez and Ahmadinejad

In a letter to Cuban leader, Fidel Castro, the Simon Wiesenthal Center commended his forceful condemnation of anti-Semitism during a recent interview in The Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/09/fidel-to-ahmadinejad-stop-slandering-the-jews/62566/), in which he expressed sensitivity to persecution of the Jewish throughout history, as well as his respect for Jewish culture and religion.

“Castro’s statement was a surprising development, considering his regime’s record on human rights abuses,” said Center officials.

Nevertheless, the letter noted that his words have carried considerable weight in Latin America for over 50 years. “We urge you to use that influence to make good on your words, by invoking your condemnation of anti-Semitism – and sensitivity to the Holocaust as an existential trauma for the State of Israel – to your admirer and self-proclaimed disciple, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez,” stated the letter, co-signed by Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations and Sergio Widder, SWC Latin American Director.

“We have exposed serious anti-Semitic incidents in Venezuela emanating from Chavez followers. Due to reluctant governmental reaction, our protests led to strong criticism from the Organization of American States (OAS). … Perhaps Castro could have greater leverage on Chávez to criminalize anti-Semitism and incitement to all forms of hate in Venezuela,” suggested Samuels.

The letter concluded in proposing that “Castro validate his warnings by coopting Chávez in pressing Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to end to his Holocaust-denial campaign, his threats against the State of Israel, and his nuclear weaponization programme.”

El Centro Wiesenthal elogia la posición de Fidel Castro sobre el antisemitismo – Solicita que incida sobre Chávez y Ahmadinejad

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal envió una carta al líder cubano Fidel Castro, en la cual elogió su enérgica condena al antisemitismo durante una reciente entrevista publicada en The Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2010/09/fidel-to-ahmadinejad-stop-slandering-the-jews/62566/), donde expresó su sensibilidad hacia las persecuciones sufridas por el pueblo judío a lo largo de la historia, y su respeto hacia la cultura y la religión judías.

“Las declaraciones de Castro resultan una auspiciosa sorpresa, tomando en cuenta los antecedentes de abusos contra los derechos humanos por parte de su régimen”, señalaron directivos del Centro.

No obstante, la carta destacó que su palabra y sus ideas han tenido una notoria influencia en América Latina desde hace más de medio siglo. “Es por eso que urgimos a Ud. a transformar sus dichos en acciones, invocando su condena al antisemitismo, y su sensibilidad hacia el Holocausto como un trauma existencial para el Estado de Israel, ante un admirador y auto-proclamado discípulo suyo, el presidente de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez”, señala la carta firmada por el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina).

“Hemos denunciado graves hechos antisemitas provenientes de simpatizantes de Chávez. Debido a la tibia respuesta por parte del gobierno, nuestras protestas resultaron en duras críticas por parte de la Organización de los Estados Americanos. Quizás Castro pueda tener una mayor incidencia para que Chávez castigue el antisemitismo y toda manifestación de odio en Venezuela”, sugirió Samuels.

La carta concluyó con una propuesta para que “Castro convalide sus señalamientos convocando a Chávez para presionar de manera conjunta sobre el presidente de Irán, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, para que ponga fin a su campaña de negación del Holocausto, sus amenazas contra el Estado de Israel y su programa de armas nucleares”.
