Wiesenthal Center Commends Argentine Airport Security for Arrest on Arrival of Iranian Couple Travelling on Falsified Stolen Israeli Passports

The Centre, in Consultative Status to the 35-member Organization of American States (OAS), proposed the pressing need for a designated unit on Iranian activity across the Americas

On 12 March, Argentine airport security detained an Iranian couple who tried to enter the country from Spain, with stolen and falsified Israeli passports.

“Only a week before the 27th anniversary of the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Argentina that left 22 dead and more than 200 wounded, this casts particular concern in view of the timing of their arrival and reveals that continued Iranian mayhem in Latin America is highly dangerous,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels and Ariel Gelblung, respectively the Centre’s Director for International Relations and Representative for Latin America.

Samuels added, “In view of the report of the assassinated Prosecutor for the AMIA Jewish Centre bombing, Alberto Nisman - and the findings shared with us - Hizbollah cells exist and operate from Venezuela and Surinam in the North to the Triple Frontier area between Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay in the South and even into the Caribbean, targetting the United States."

He continued: "The porous nature of lengthy unmonitored borders requires a designated unit on Iranian/Hizbollah activity across the hemisphere... In Consultative Status to the 35-member Organization of American States (OAS), we have stressed to Secretary General Luis Almagro the pressing need for a Pan-American approach to this danger.”

Gelblung emphasized, among Iranian linked interventions:

- "The illegal activity in the Triple Frontier region
- the AMIA Jewish Centre bombing in Buenos Aires
- the assassination of Prosecutor Alberto Nisman
- the provision of Venezuelan passports to Hizbollah terrorists by the government of Nicolás Maduro
- the undocumented flights between Tehran and Caracas
- the attempts to influence pressure to revive the nefarious Memorandum of Understanding between Argentina and Iran aimed at gaining impunity for the Iranians sought by INTERPOL for the AMIA atrocity."

El Centro, con estatus de miembro consultivo ante los 35 miembros de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), impulsó oportunamente la apremiante creación de una unidad destinada a monitorear la actividad iraní en las Américas.

"La llegada de la pareja a través de España, país donde Irán es políticamente activo, y una semana antes del vigésimo séptimo aniversario del atentado contra la Embajada de Israel en Buenos Aires, que dejó 22 muertos y más de 200 heridos, enciende una señal de alerta"

El 12 de marzo, el accionar de la seguridad aeroportuaria argentina derivó en la detención de una pareja iraní que ingresó al país desde España, con pasaportes israelíes robados y adulterados, según pudo corroborarse.

"Este suceso, a sólo una semana del vigésimo séptimo aniversario del atentado contra la Embajada de Israel en Argentina, que dejó un saldo de 22 muertos y más de 200 heridos, resulta de especial preocupación habida cuenta del momento en que se produce, y revela la peligrosidad del continuo accionar iraní en América Latina", declararon los Dres Shimon Samuels y Ariel Gelblung, respectivamente, el Director del Centro de Relaciones Internacionales y Representante para América Latina.

Samuels agregó: "A la luz del informe producido por el asesinado Fiscal Alberto Nisman, a cargo de la Unidad Especial AMIA - y los hallazgos que oportunamente compartiera con el Centro -,existen células dormidas de Hezbollah operando desde Venezuela y Surinam en el Norte, hasta el área de la Triple Frontera entre Argentina, Brasil y Paraguay en el Sur e incluso en el Caribe, apuntando en dirección a los Estados Unidos ".

Continuó: "La naturaleza extremadamente porosa de largas fronteras fuera de todo control, requiere de una unidad específicamente asignada al monitoreo de la actividad iraní / Hezbollah en todo el hemisferio ... Hemos manifestado en nuestro estado de organismo consultivo a los 35 miembros de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), así como hecho especial hincapié ante el Secretario General Don Luis Almagro acerca de la necesidad apremiante de un enfoque panamericano ante este peligro ".

Gelblung destacó, entre las intervenciones vinculadas a Irán:

- "La actividad ilegal en la región de la Triple Frontera.

- El atentado del Centro Judío AMIA en Buenos Aires.

- El asesinato del fiscal Alberto Nisman.

- La provisión de pasaportes venezolanos a terroristas de Hezbollah por parte del gobierno de Nicolás Maduro

- Los vuelos indocumentados entre Teherán y Caracas.

- Los intentos de insuflar presión para revivir el infame Memorandum de Entendimiento entre Argentina e Irán, con el objetivo de obtener la impunidad de los iraníes buscados por INTERPOL por el atentado contra la AMIA".
