Wiesenthal Center Commends OAS General Assembly Rejection of Anti-Israel Resolution
Slams Ecuador for Importing Middle East Conflict instead of Addressing Urgent Issues of the Americas
The Simon Wiesenthal Center is participating at the 40th General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Lima, Perú.
The G.A.’s slogan has been “Peace, Security and Cooperation in the Americas”, and Peruvian President Alan Garcia presented the diverse hemispheric challenges on the agenda.
Despite the many concerns of the region, the first proposal at the opening Plenary Meeting was that the G.A. condemn Israel for its intervention against the “Gaza Flotilla”, presented by Ecuador’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ricardo Patiño, with the support of Nicaragua and Venezuela. It was dismissed by 24 votes of the 34 Member-States.
 “When Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez, last week, made a virulent attack against Israel, we warned of the dangers in importing the Middle East conflict to the Americas”, noted Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

“We deplore the attempt to import extra-hemispheric conflicts instead of addressing urgent issues of the Americas. This tactical demagoguery aims to avoid confronting the grievances of the peoples of the Americas”. said Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and delegate to the General Assembly.
The Center applauded the Plenary’s over-ruling Ecuador’s proposal.

Critica a Ecuador por importar el conflicto de Medio Oriente en lugar de abocarse a asuntos urgentes de las Américas
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal participa en la 40ª Asamblea General (AG) de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA) que tiene lugar en Lima, Perú.
La A.G. se reúne bajo el lema “Paz, Seguridad y Cooperación en las Américas”. Durante su apertura, el presidente peruano Alan García describió los diversos desafíos que tiene el hemisferio para abordar durante el encuentro.
A pesar de los numerosos problemas de la región, la primera propuesta durante la primera Sesión Plenaria fue que la A.G. emitiera una condena contra Israel por su intervención contra la “Flotilla de Gaza”. La iniciativa fue presentada por el Canciller ecuatoriano, Ricardo Patiño, y recibió el apoyo verbal de Nicaragua y Venezuela. Sometida a votación, la propuesta fue rechazada por 24 votos entre 34 Estados-miembros.
“Cuando el presidente venezolano Hugo Chávez atacó violentamente a Israel la semana pasada, alertamos acerca de los peligros de importar el conflicto de Medio Oriente a las Américas”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal.
“Deploramos este intento de importar conflictos extra-hemisféricos en lugar de abordar problemas urgentes de las Américas. Esta táctica demagógica pretende eludir el abordaje de las necesidades de los pueblos de nuestra región”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina y delegado del Centro ante la Asamblea General.
 El Centro elogió la decisión del Plenario de rechazar la propuesta ecuatoriana.
