Wiesenthal Center Celebrates a Victory Against BDS in Chile

The ruling today of the Comptroller General of the Republic - an independent constitutional body that rules on the legality of acts of public administration - declared illegitimate the positions of the Municipal Council of the City of Valdivia.

These include unilateral claims of violence on the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, requesting the President of the Republic to review cooperation agreements between the Chilean and Israeli armies, calls to expel the Israeli Ambassador, declaring Valdivia the first municipality 'free of Israeli apartheid', ending contracts with Israeli companies.

This exemplary ruling maintains that Chilean international policy is reserved for the President of the Republic and not a municipal council. Likewise that the law maintains that no contract with state organs can be discriminated against on grounds of nationality. Thus the Municipal Council does not comply with the law.

"We welcome Chile into the club of states that understands how 'Boycott' is a step to delegitimization, exclusion and atrocity - whether against indigenous, blacks, women, gays, Jews or the Jewish state, Israel - inspired by the boycott of Nazi Germany" that led to the in the Holocaust," stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director of International Relations at the Wiesenthal Center, adding: "The same applies in the theft of a nation's identity, as in the abuse of the victims of South African Apartheid, by maliciously attributing this crime to the democratic State of Israel."

"The official visit of the Wiesenthal Center, last August to Santiago, denounced BDS and the constant hostility that the Palestinian Federation of Chile exerts against the Jewish Community by transplanting the Palestinian-Israel conflict into Latin America. We requested Chilean government officials to take appropriate measures. The Comptroller's ruling marks the beginning of an appropriate response," concluded Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Center´s Latin America Representative.

El Centro Wiesenthal celebra una victoria contra el BDS en Chile

El fallo de hoy de la Contraloría General de la República, un órgano constitucional independiente que rige la legalidad de los actos de la administración pública, declaró ilegítimos los cargos del Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad de Valdivia.

Estos incluyen reclamos unilaterales de violencia contra los palestinos en la Franja de Gaza, la solicitud al Presidente de la República que revise los acuerdos de cooperación entre los ejércitos de Chile e Israel, llama a expulsar al Embajador israelí y declara a Valdivia el primer municipio "libre de apartheid israelí" y determina la abstención para contratar con empresas israelíes.

Esta sentencia ejemplar sostiene que la política internacional chilena está reservada para el Presidente de la República y no para un concejo municipal. Del mismo modo sostiene que ningún contrato con órganos estatales puede ser discriminado por motivos de nacionalidad. Por lo tanto el concejo municipal no cumple con la ley.

"Damos la bienvenida a Chile al club de estados que entienden cómo el 'boicot' es un paso hacia la deslegitimación, la exclusión y la atrocidad, ya sea contra indígenas, negros, mujeres, gays, judíos o el estado judío, Israel, inspirados por el boicot de la Alemania nazi. "eso llevó al Holocausto", declaró el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal. Agregó: "Lo mismo se aplica al robo de identidad de una nación, como al abuso de las víctimas del apartheid sudafricano. atribuyendo maliciosamente este crimen al Estado democrático de Israel ".

“La visita oficial de las autoridades del Centro Wiesenthal el pasado agosto al gobierno nacional en Santiago tuvo por objeto denunciar, este tipo de accionar y la constante hostilidad que la Federación Palestina de Chile ejercen contra la Comunidad Judía en dicho país, transplantando el conflicto palestino-israelí a América Latina…Solicitamos a los funcionarios del gobierno de Chile que tome las medidas apropiadas. El fallo de la Contraloría es un comienzo de una respuesta apropiada,” concluyó el Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro para América Latina.
