Wiesenthal Center Calls on Front-Running Chilean Presidential Candidate, Michelle Bachelet, to Publicly Condemn and Dismiss her Campaign Coordinator due to his Anti-Semitic Remarks

In a letter to former Chilean President - front-running candidate for November 17 elections - Michelle Bachelet, the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged the removal of her campaign staffer, Senator Eugenio Tuma, for his anti-Semitic statements on the Internet TV show “Controversia TV” (www.controversia.cl).

Asked about Israeli backpacker visitors in southern Chile, reportedly presented as “a risk to Chilean territorial integrity” and the “lack of reaction” by the Chilean Army to the presence of such “Israeli soldiers”, masquerading as “backpackers who are actually reserve soldiers,” Tuma responded:

—“It is naive for Chilean security to ignore what happens when numerous contingents who look like civilians but are former soldiers from the Israeli army come to map the area.”

—“In that region, you can find many signs in Hebrew … each year there are around 8,000 and 9,000 of them who need no entry visa.”

—“There are books written by [Miguel] Serrano that people must read.” (Serrano was a Hitler admirer who served as Chilean Ambassador in the post War years), adding, “You cannot criticize anything that refers to Israel; they are champions of the industry of compassion … the UN created a problem, because they established the State of Israel but did not want to establish a Palestinian State.”

“Senator Tuma’s statements recall the notorious text, ‘The Andinia Plan’, a South American version of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, which allege a Jewish plot to take over Patagonia. Tuma’s libels incite to violence against innocent Israeli tourists who are welcomed with Hebrew signs by local merchants enjoying business in a remote region,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center. “Also worrying is the tone of Controversia TV anchor that gave Tuma a platform. Both are complicit in incitement and must be investigated,” continued Samuels.

“To praise the pro-Nazi militant, Miguel Serrano, exposes the anti-Semitic identity of Tuma. For him, “Jew” and “Israeli” are interchangeable targets. He also rewrites history in charging the UN resolution from November 1947 as establishing Israel, when it recognized two States. It was the Arab world who rejected a Palestinian State side-by-side with Israel – a tragic situation that persists today,” added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

“We call on the candidate Bachelet – an acknowledged opponent of hate speech – to immediately dismiss Senator Tuma from her campaign staff and to publicly condemn his anti-Semitic agenda,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Wiesenthal solicitó a la candidata presidencial chilena Michelle Bachelet que condene públicamente y remueva a coordinador de campaña debido a sus declaraciones antisemitas

En una carta a la expresidenta de Chile y candidata favorita para las elecciones del 17 de noviembre, Michelle Bachelet, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal solicitó que removiera al senador Eugenio Tuma de su comando de campaña debido a sus declaraciones antisemitas en el programa Controversia TV, emitido a través de Internet (www.controversia.cl).

Consultado acerca de los viajes turísticos de mochileros israelíes a la Patagonia chilena, presentados como un riesgo para “la continuidad territorial de Chile” y la “falta de reacción” de las fuerzas armadas chilenas ante la visita de “soldados israelíes” a quienes se describe como “supuestos mochileros que son reservistas”, Tuma respondió:

- “Es una ingenuidad por parte de Chile y su seguridad no mirar qué ocurre con numerosos contingentes que vienen de civil pero son egresados de las fuerzas armadas israelíes que vienen a hacer mapas”

- “Gran parte de la señalética en la zona está en hebreo (…) cada año ingresa un contingente de entre 8000 y 9000, sin ninguna necesidad de visa”

- “Hay libros que escribió [Miguel] Serrano y que hay que leerlos” (Serrano fue un admirador de Hitler que sirvió como embajador de Chile en la posguerra); agregó que “no se puede criticar nada que tenga que ver con Israel, ellos son campeones de la industria de la compasión (…) las Naciones Unidas han creado un problema porque establecieron el Estado de Israel pero no quisieron instalar un Estado palestino”.

“Las palabras del senador Tuma hacen recordar el ‘Plan Andinia’, una versión sudamericana de los ‘Protocolos de los Sabios de Sion’, acerca de un supuesto plan judío para apoderarse de la Patagonia. Las calumnias de Tuma incitan a la violencia contra inocentes turistas israelíes, que son recibidos con carteles en idioma hebreo por comerciantes de regiones lejanas”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal. “También es preocupante el tono del anfitrión de Controversia TV, que brindó a Tuma una plataforma. Ambos son cómplices en la incitación y deben ser investigados”, continuó Samuels.

“El elogio a textos de un militante pro-nazi como Miguel Serrano expone el antisemitismo de Tuma. Para él, “judío” e “israelí” constituyen un blanco indistinto. También se permite reescribir la historia en relación con la resolución de Naciones Unidas de noviembre de 1947, al decir que estableció el Estado de Israel, cuando en realidad reconoció dos Estados. Fue el mundo árabe el que rechazó entonces la creación de un Estado palestino vecino a Israel, una situación trágica que se mantiene hasta el presente”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

“Hacemos un llamamiento a la candidata Bachelet, una reconocida opositora al discurso de odio, para que remueva inmediatamente al senador Tuma de su equipo de campaña y para que condene de manera pública su agenda antisemita”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
