During a campaign rally in support of the reelection of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, former President Lula Da Silva attacked the opposition candidate Aecio Neves, stating that “we often see the way they are attacking us as the way Nazis attacked during World War II”.
“As President of Brazil, Lula led profound transformations which helped the poor to integrate into Brazil’s economic life. He is a worldwide renowned and respected personality. The use of such rhetoric against Neves, diminishes his image and devalues the horrors of Nazism, for if everything is Nazi then nothing is Nazi”, noted Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.
“During his Presidency, Lula would commemorate International Holocaust Day at the Planalto Presidential Palace. He knows the history of Nazism, and we are therefore disturbed that he chose to make such a comparison. Every political campaign is aggressive, but this goes beyond any reasonable framework in a democratic debate”, added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.
“The history of Brazil as a country which joined the allied forces against the Nazis, and as the home of an important community of Holocaust survivors deserves that Lula publicly apologize for his unfortunate comments”, concluded the Center’s officials.

El Centro Wiesenthal hace un llamamiento al expresidente Lula Da Silva para que se disculpe públicamente por haber equiparado la campaña del candidato opositor Aecio Neves con el nazismo

Durante un acto de campaña en apoyo a la reelección de la Presidenta brasileña Dilma Rousseff, el expresidente Lula Da Silva respondió a las críticas de la oposición señalando que “de vez en cuando parece que nos están atacando como los nazis agredían en la época de la Segunda Guerra Mundial”.
“Lula fue un Presidente que llevó a cabo transformaciones profundas que permitieron que los sectores menos favorecidos se incorporaran a la vida económica de Brasil. Es una personalidad que goza de respeto y proyección internacional. El ataque al candidato Neves en esos términos empequeñece su propia figura y devalúa los horrores del nazismo, dado que si todo es nazi, nada lo es”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.
“Durante su mandato, Lula solía conmemorar el Día Internacional del Holocausto en el Palacio presidencial de Planalto. Conoce bien la historia del nazismo, y por eso nos sentimos perturbados por su comparación. En toda campaña política suele haber discursos agresivos, pero esto supera lo razonable dentro del debate democrático”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
“La historia de Brasil como un país que integró las fuerzas aliadas contra los nazis y como el hogar de una importante comunidad de sobrevivientes del Holocausto merece que Lula se disculpe públicamente por sus comentarios desafortunados”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
