Wiesenthal Center Calls on Argentine Province Authorities to Arrest and Prosecute Jewish Cemetery Vandals

The Simon Wiesenthal Center called on the authorities of Santiago del Estero (a province located 600 miles Northwest of Buenos Aires) to investigate, arrest and prosecute those responsible for the desecration of the region’s Jewish cemetery.

“Most hatemongers pursue their victims to the grave. Anti-Semites go beyond, denying the Jew even the respite of eternal rest. Attacking a cemetery is a cowardly act of moral depravity and a threatening message to the living. Santiago del Estero authorities must act promptly to guarantee the safety of the province’s Jewish community,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

“The leaders of Santiago del Estero’s Jewish community noted the lack of graffiti, daubings or swastikas, suggesting that the vandals had deliberately left only material damage to avoid mores serious hate crime charges. Nevertheless, it is clear to us that the motivation was blatantly antisemitism”, added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

The Center’s officials expressed their solidarity with the community of Santiago del Estero.

El Centro Wiesenthal reclama a las autoridades de Santiago del Estero que arresten y procesen a quienes profanaron cementerio judío

Buenos Aires, 8 de diciembre de 2014

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal formuló un llamamiento a las autoridades de la provincia de Santiago del Estero para que investiguen, arresten y procesen a los responsables de la profanación del cementerio judío local.

“La mayoría de quienes promueven el odio persiguen a sus víctimas hasta la tumba. El antisemitismo va más allá, negándole al judío siquiera el alivio del descanso eterno. Atacar un cementerio es un acto cobarde e inmoral y una amenaza contra quienes están vivos. Las autoridades de Santiago del Estero deben actuar rápidamente para garantizar la seguridad de la comunidad judía de la provincia”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.

“Los líderes de la comunidad judía de Santiago del Estero han destacado la ausencia de grafitis, inscripciones o esvásticas, lo que sugiere que los vándalos se limitaron a provocar daños materiales para evitar cargos vinculados a acciones discriminatorias. Sin embargo, para nosotros es claro que la motivación fue descaradamente antisemita”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

Los directivos del Centro manifestaron su solidaridad con la comunidad judía de Santiago del Estero.
