The Simon Wiesenthal Center, present at the annual General Assembly of the Organization of American States in Guatemala, called on its Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, to condemn an anti-Semitic outburst by Venezuelan Permanent Representative, Roy Chaderton Matos.

During the Dialogue between Civil Society and the Secretary General, a Venezuelan youth delegate, Lorent Saleh, (Americas Young Democracy Network) questioned the legitimacy of the recent presidential elections in his country. Out of the blue, the Venezuelan Ambassador Chaderton Matos unexpectedly took the floor and accused Saleh (whose grandfather emigrated from Ramallah to Venezuela) of being “a Palestinian agent sponsored by the Mossad, which is a terrorist organization.”

“Mr. Secretary General, this inflammatory incitement by Ambassador Chaderton Matos during a session that you chaired – publicly booed, to their credit, by most of the more than 300 Civil Society of the Americas delegates present – demands your vigorous condemnation. Such language does not represent the people of Venezuela nor the principles of the OAS,” declared Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America and the Center’s Delegate to the OAS General Assembly).

“Chaderton Matos must be held accountable for any subsequent assault on the Venezuelan Jewish community, and his words belie President Nicolas Maduro’s assurance that there is no anti-Semitism in Venezuela,” noted Widder, adding, “When the Center privately challenged the Ambassador for discordantly introducing the Middle East into a debate on the Americas, we were arrogantly rebuffed and told to ‘say what you will’.”

“Our Center stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan Jewish community and for zero tolerance for hate in the Americas,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Wiesenthal solicita a la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) que condene la incitación antisemita por parte de Venezuela durante su reunión anual de la Asamblea General

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal, presente en la Asamblea General anual de la Organización de los Estados Americanos, solicitó al Secretario General del organismo, José Miguel Insulza, que condene el exabrupto antisemita por parte del Representante Permanente de Venezuela, embajador Roy Chaderton Matos.

Durante el Diálogo de la Sociedad Civil con el Secretario General, un delegado venezolano, Lorent Saleh, (Red Democracia Joven de las Américas), cuestionó la legitimidad de las recientes elecciones presidenciales en su país. Fuera de agenda, irrumpió el embajador Chaderton Matos, exigió el uso de la palabra, y acusó a Saleh (cuyo abuelo inmigró a Venezuela desde Ramallah) de ser “un agente palestino financiado por el Mossad, que es un organismo terrorista”.

“Sr. Secretario General, esta incitación provocadora por parte del embajador Chaderton Matos durante una sesión presidida por Ud. demanda una vigorosa condena de su parte. Con satisfacción, reconocemos a la mayoría de los más de 300 delegados de la sociedad civil de las Américas que abuchearon la intervención del diplomático venezolano. Ese lenguaje no representa al pueblo de Venezuela ni a los principios de la OEA”, declararon el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina y Delegado del Centro ante la Asamblea General de la OEA).

“Semejante discurso es un reflejo de la sombra de Teherán en la región y el intento por parte del régimen demagógico venezolano de distraer la atención sobre sus malos manejos políticos y económicos a través de la búsqueda racista de un chivo expiatorio”, manifestó Samuels.

“Chaderton Matos debe ser considerado responsable por cualquier agresión subsiguiente contra la comunidad judía venezolana. Sus palabras desmienten al presidente Nicolás Maduro, que aseguró hace dos semanas que en Venezuela no existe el antisemitismo”, señaló Widder, quien agregó que “cuando el Centro cuestionó de manera privada al embajador Chaderton Matos por haber introducido un elemento discordante sobre el Medio Oriente en medio de un debate sobre las Américas, fuimos rechazados de modo arrogante e invitados a ‘decir lo que quisiéramos’”.

“Nuestro Centro se manifiesta solidario con la comunidad judía venezolana y a favor de la tolerancia cero para el odio en las Américas”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
