Wiesenthal Center Award to Mexican Diplomat Andres Roemer

The Simon Wiesenthal Center presented an award to Andrés Roemer, former Mexican Ambassador to UNESCO, for his resolute stand against its Executive Board resolutions of October 13, 2016 in Paris, that deny Jewish and Christian ties to Jerusalem.

During the session, Dr. Roemer distributed to his colleagues copies of his letter to the Director-General of UNESCO, stating "UNESCO must be committed to its mandate. The mandate of conscience and human dignity. It does not matter if it is colored by a flag, with one star or fifty stars. If it features a cross or a crescent. Today the resolution presented here demands that we raise our voice and redouble our efforts against any speech, or statement that incites to xenophobia, discrimination o depreciation of the other, ". He then demonstratively left the hall. This brave statement of principles was to cost him his job.

EL CENTRO WIESENTHAL DISTINGUE AL DIPLOMATICO MEXICANO ANDRES ROEMER

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal entregó un premio a Andrés Roemer, por entonces Embajador de México ante la UNESCO, por su decidida posición contra las resoluciones del Consejo Ejecutivo del 13 de octubre de 2016 en París, que niegan los vínculos judíos y cristianos con Jerusalén.

Durante el período de sesiones, el Dr. Roemer distribuyó a sus colegas copias de su carta al Director General de la UNESCO, en la que declaraba: “La UNESCO debe estar comprometida con su mandato. El mandato de la conciencia y de la dignidad humana. No importa si ella está coloreada por una bandera, con una estrella o con 50; o si está desdibujada con una cruz o con una semi-luna. Hoy la resolución aquí presentada, exige levantar la voz y redoblar esfuerzos en contra de todo discurso, o pronunciamiento que incite a la xenofobia, a la discriminación o al desconocimiento del otro”, y abandonó ostensiblemente la sala. Esta declaración de principios le costó su cargo.

Junto con DIARIO JUDIO (México) y en presencia de las personalidades culturales más destacadas de México, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal elogió el valor y los valores sobresalientes del diplomático.

El Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro y Delegado ante la UNESCO, invocó la obligación de honrar las pocas luces en la oscuridad que redimen la brújula moral de la humanidad, los salvadores durante el Holocausto, los pocos países que ofrecieron refugio. “El heroísmo de Andrés Roemer en las trincheras del campo de batalla de la herencia de la UNESCO, donde el Muro Occidental y el Monte del Templo serán seguidos el próximo mes en Polonia por el robo de la Cueva de los Patriarcas. Roemer ha encabezado el camino para alentar a un caucus de integridad a seguir, para proteger las narraciones judía y cristiana.”

Samuels obsequió a Roemer una lámpara de arcilla de Judea del segundo siglo como evidencia de los 3.500 años de herencia judía y para iluminar su camino en los desafíos por delante

El Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro para América Latina, señaló que "el Dr. Roemer tuvo el coraje de decir lo que el mundo ve y no dice, que tales resoluciones ni siquiera deben ser tratadas y que lejos de generar valores universales que unan a la humanidad, incitan divisiones que resultan denigrantes para el prójimo.
