On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the AMIA Jewish Center bombing, the General Assembly of the Organization of American States approved the designation of an Inter-American day against Terrorism on June 3, the date on which the Inter-American Treaty against Terrorism was signed. .

During this Assembly, in a meeting with  Secretary General, Luis Almagro, the Wiesenthal Center congratulated him for adopting the definition of anti-Semitism of the IHRA (International Holocaust Rememberance Alliance). This adoption included an appeal to the 35 member countries to also embrace it.

Nicaragua did so two days later and Canada last week.

The Center urged the Secretary General that the 35 member nations of the OAS must take action against anti-Semitism, their joining IHRA. In Latin America only Argentina is a full member and El Salvador and Uruguay are observers.

We also called for the Organization to declare Hezbollah a terrorist group, which the Secretary General personally is ready to do.

Finally, the Secretary said: "The legacy of Simon Wiesenthal to seek justice and not revenge should inspire Venezuelans to judge crimes against humanity and their imprescriptibility."

The Center held several bilateral meetings on future activities.

We were received by Ambassador Fernando Simas Magalhaes of Brazil, with whom we began to plan the future presentation of the exhibition co-sponsored by UNESCO: "People, Book, Land: 3,500 Years of Relationship between the Jewish People and the Holy Land" in Brasilia.

The new Foreign Minister of Chile, Teodoro Ribera, promised to receive a high delegation of the Center in Santiago in August to analyze serious acts of hostility, to which the small local Jewish community is subjected at the hands of the Palestinian Federation of that country.

The Foreign Minister of Costa Rica, Manuel Ventura Robles expressed great interest in working with the Center

Finally, the Permanent Ambassador appointed by the National Assembly of Venezuela, Gustavo Tarre, requested help from the Wiesenthal Center so that once the regime of the dictator, Nicolás Maduro, gives way to a true democracy, they can rebuild trust in institutions and the full exercise of human rights and to immediately restore relations with the State of Israel.

El Centro Wiesenthal en la 49ª Asamblea General de la Organización de Estados Americanos

En vísperas de cumplirse el 25* aniversario del atentado a la AMIA, la Asamblea General de la Organización de Estados Americanos aprobó designar el 3 de junio, fecha en que se suscribió el Tratado Interamericano contra el Terrorismo, como “Dia Interamericano contra el Terrorismo”.

Durante dicha Asamblea, en una reunión con el Secretario General, Luis Almagro, el Centro Wiesenthal aprovechó para felicitarlo por haber adoptado desde la definición sobre antisemitismo elaborada por la IHRA (Alianza para la Rememoración del Holocausto). Dicha adopción incluyó una exhortación a los 35 países miembros para que a su vez la abracen.

Nicaragua la adoptó dos días después y Canadá la semana pasada.

El Centro le planteó al Secretario General que las 35 naciones miembros de la OEA deben tomar acción contra el antisemitismo y sería aconsejable que soliciten su inclusión dentro de la IHRA, dado que en América Latina solo Argentina es miembro pleno y El Salvador y Uruguay son observadores.

También, solicitamos que se inicien las gestiones para que la Organización declare a Hezbollah como grupo terrorista, lo que el Secretario General en forma personal ya calificó.

Almagro recibió con beneplácito ambas peticiones y se comprometió a trabajar en este sentido.

Por último, el Secretario manifestó: “El legado de Simon Wiesenthal de buscar justicia y no venganza debe inspirar a los venezolanos para juzgar los crímenes de lesa humanidad y su imprescriptibilidad”.

Por otra parte, el Centro desarrolló distintas reuniones bilaterales para proyectar actividades futuras.

Nos recibieron el Embajador Fernando Simas Magalhaes de Brasil, con quien comenzamos a planificar la futura presentación de la exhibición copatrocinada con UNESCO: “Pueblo, Libro, Tierra: 3.500 Años de Relación entre el Pueblo Judío y Tierra Santa” en Brasilia.

El recién asumido Canciller de Chile, Teodoro Ribera, comprometió recibir a una alta delegación del Centro en Santiago durante el próximo agosto para analizar los graves hechos de hostilidad a que está sometida la pequeña colectividad judía local a manos de la Federación Palestina de ese país.

El canciller de Costa Rica, Manuel Ventura Robles manifestó gran interés en trabajar junto al Centro.

Por último, el Embajador permanente designado por la Asamblea de Venezuela, Gustavo Tarre solicitó ayuda al Centro Wiesenthal para que una vez que el régimen del dictador Nicolás Maduro dé paso a una verdadera democracia, puedan reconstruir la confianza en las instituciones y el pleno ejercicio de los derechos humanos y para restablecer inmediatamente las relaciones con el Estado de Israel.
