Wiesenthal Center Applauds Latin American Football Disciplinary Tribunal Penalties Against Palestinian Club of Chile

The Latin American Football Confederation (Conembol) Disciplinary Court has fined the Chilean Palestinian Football Club $30,000 for having used an international match "to carry out unsportsmanlike demonstrations." It was also warned in the event of repeating the situations or of violations of an equal nature.

On April 2, 2019, the official stadium spokesman for a match against Alianza Lima of Peru, broadcasted a call to the public for its support "for the liberation of Palestine".

This was not the first such occasion. Last time, the number "1" on the club teeshirt, superimposed a so called map of "Palestine" displacing Israel, thus wiping it off the map. This had served as grounds for a former sanction by the ANFP (National Association of Professional Soccer) of Chile together with the Conmebol,.

"We hope that the application of sanctions will result in the leaders to dedicate only to sport as an activity that builds bridges, instead of continually using it as a means of hatred and violence. National federations and CONMEBOL must work with our 11-Point Program against Racism, Discrimination and Xenophobia in Sport, under the auspices of the Organization of American States and unanimous support of the 23 countries of the Latin American Parliament, "said Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representative of the Wiesenthal Center for Latin America.

Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Centre's Director for International Relations, commented: "Chile has the largest Palestinian community outside the Middle East...Indeed, the Palestinian Football Club was founded by Jewish immigrants to Chile fleeing Nazi Germany, as the only Palestinians at that time, were the Jews living under the British Palestine Mandate...The Club was taken over by the Arab community only after the 1948 independence of Israel... "The Wiesenthal Centre is dedicated to combatting incitement on the football terraces,whether in Europe,Latin America or the Middle East"
"The Centre exposed a former case of the Chilean Palestinian Football Federation's purchase of major newspaper space calling for Israel's demise," concluded Samuels and Gelblung.

El Centro Wiesenthal Aplaude las Sanciones del Tribunal Disciplinario de la CONMEBOL contra el Club Palestino de Chile.
 
 
Buenos Aires y París, 22 de mayo.
El Tribunal de Disciplina de la Confederación Latinoamericana de Fútbol (Conembol) ha multado al Club de Fútbol Palestino de Chile con U$S 30,000 por haber utilizado un partido internacional "para llevar a cabo manifestaciones antideportivas". También se lo advirtió para el caso en que se repitieran estas situaciones o violaciones de igualdad naturaleza.
El 2 de abril de 2019, en un partido contra Alianza Lima, de Perú, el locutor oficial del estadio para un partido contra Alianza Lima de Perú, arengó al público llamando a apoyar “la liberación de Palestina".
Este no es la primera situación que se plantea. Anteriormente, el número "1" en la camiseta del club superpuso el llamado mapa de "Palestina" que desplaza a Israel y lo borra del mapa. Esto había servido como base para una sanción por parte de la ANFP (Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional) de Chile junto con Conmebol ,.
“Esperamos que la aplicación de la sanción tenga el objeto de llevar a los dirigentes a la reflexión y dedicarse solamente al deporte como actividad que tiende puentes en lugar de buscar la forma de continuar utilizándolo como medio para el odio y la violencia. Las federaciones nacionales y la CONMEBOL deben trabajar con nuestro Programa de 11 Puntos contra el Racismo, la Discriminación y la Xenofobia en el Deporte, con auspicio de la Organización de Estados Americanos y apoyo unánime de los 23 países del Parlamento Latinoamericano”, sostuvo el Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Representante del Centro Wiesenthal para América Latina.
El Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales, comentó: "Chile tiene la mayor comunidad palestina fuera de Medio Oriente ... De hecho, el club de fútbol palestino fue fundado por inmigrantes judíos en Chile que huían de la Alemania nazi. De hecho los únicos palestinos en ese momento histórico eran los judíos que vivían bajo el mandato británico de Palestina ... El Club fue tomado por la comunidad árabe solo después de la independencia de Israel en 1948 ... El Centro Wiesenthal está comprometido a combatir la incitación al odio en todos los campos de fútbol, ya sea en Europa, América Latina o el Medio Oriente "
"El Centro denunció un caso anterior de violencia por parte del Club Palestino, por lo que este es su modus operandi ", concluyeron Samuels y Gelblung.
