Wiesenthal Center Applauds Chile Football Federation Penalty for Club Palestino Hatemongering

“Wearing ‘Palestinian´ t-shirt that obliterates Israel aimed to transfer Middle East conflict to Latin American soil”



The Simon Wiesenthal Center lauded the Chilean Football Federation (ANFP in Spanish) penalty, fining Club Palestino for its new season t-shirts that feature the entire map of the State of Israel as ‘Palestine’.

Palestino’s uniform had raised protests from the Wiesenthal Center and the Chilean Jewish community, among others, including a formal request for the penalty by another team from the same league, Deportivo Ñublense (see http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=4441467&ct=13580501#.Ut6tVxAtrIU) .

The ANFP ruling prohibited “any form of political, religious, sexual, ethnic, social or racial discrimination”. Club Palestino was given a fine of US$ 1,300 and ordered to change its uniform.

“We applaud this ‘red card’ against incitement which is a precedent to stop further transplants of foreign conflicts onto Chile’s football terraces. We will take Chile’s decision to FIFA as a model for football federations worldwide,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

El Centro Wiesenthal manifiesta su beneplácito por la sanción contra el club Palestino de Chile debido a su incitación

“La utilización de una camiseta con un mapa de ‘Palestina’ que eliminaba a Israel pretendía importar el conflicto de Medio Oriente a suelo latinoamericano”

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó su satisfacción por la decisión de la Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Chile (ANFP) de sancionar al club Palestino debido a que su nueva camiseta presentaba un mapa con el territorio del Estado de Israel como si fuera “Palestina”

La remera de Palestino había despertado protestas del Centro Wiesenthal, de la comunidad judía chilena, y una solicitud formal de sanción presentada por otro equipo de primera división, Deportivo Ñublense (ver http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=4441467&ct=13580501#.Ut6tVxAtrIU)
En su fallo, la ANFP manifestó su oposición contra “cualquier forma de discriminación política, religiosa, sexual, étnica, social o racial”. Palestino deberá pagar una multa de US$ 1.300 y cambiar el diseño de su camiseta.

“Felicitamos a la ANFP por esta ‘tarjeta roja’ contra la incitación, que sienta un precedente para frenar futuros intentos de trasplantar conflictos extranjeros al ámbito de las tribunas de los estadios chilenos. Elevaremos esta decisión de Chile al nivel de la FIFA, como un modelo para federaciones de fútbol de todo el mundo”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.
