British Ambassador Shan Morgan, hosted VE (Victory in Europe) Day at her Buenos Aires residence in homage to World War II volunteers from around the world, including Anglo-Argentines, who had joined the British and Canadian armed forces.
Present were two dozen surviving Anglo-Argentine veterans, and the diplomatic representatives of Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.
Ambassador Morgan congratulated the Simon Wiesenthal Center for its film Walking with Destiny, the story of Winston Churchill’s role in winning the war and ending the Holocaust. She added that over 600 Argentines had responded to Churchill’s call “to brace themselves to their duties,” declaring that “those young men had long and often dangerous journeys risking U-boat attacks before joining allied forces and seeing action in all theatres of the war.”

The Center’s British-born Director for International Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, stressed that “but for Churchill, Nazi flags may very well still be flying across Europe today, in which case I and my family would not be here.”
Ambassador Morgan hoped that the Churchill film would help inform future generations. The film was also screened the next day at the AMIA Jewish Center, which had been bombed by terrorists in 1994, with 85 killed and over 300 injured.
In saluting the Royal British Legion of Argentina, Samuels pledged that the Wiesenthal Center would “record the oral history of the volunteer veterans, to educate young Argentines and Britons of this little known chapter.”
Among the invitees, two of the Argentine-based veterans (one an ex-RAF pilot) brought a moving importance to the reunion. This was the first time they had seen each other since leaving post-war London in 1947.
Members of the Latin American leadership of the Centro Simon Wiesenthal were in attendance, led by the Center’s Latin American Director, Sergio Widder.

La Embajadora Británica Shan Morgan en Argentina ofreció una recepción en su residencia para conmemorar el “Día de la Victoria en Europa” y homenajear a veteranos de distintas naciones del mundo, incluyendo anglo-argentinos, que se unieron a las fuerzas armadas británicas y canadienses durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Entre los presentes, se contaron dos docenas de veteranos anglo-argentinos, y representantes diplomáticos de Alemania, Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, Estados Unidos, India, Italia, los Países Bajos, Pakistán, Polonia y Ucrania.
La Embajadora Morgan felicitó al Centro Simon Wiesenthal por su documental “Walking with Destiny” (Por la senda del destino), que refleja el rol de Winston Churchill para conseguir la victoria y poner fin al Holocausto. Agregó que más de 600 anglo-argentinos respondieron al llamado de Churchill para “prepararse para cumplir con su deber”, y destacó que “esos jóvenes debieron someterse a largos y a menudo peligrosos viajes, expuestos al ataque de submarinos alemanes, antes de poder unirse a las fuerzas aliadas y participar de las acciones en todos los teatros de operaciones de la guerra”.
El Director de Relaciones Internacionales, nacido en Gran Bretaña, Dr. Shimon Samuels, resaltó que “de no haber sido por Churchill, hoy todavía podrían estar flameando banderas nazis en toda Europa, en cuyo caso ni yo ni mi familia hubiésemos estado aquí”.
La Embajadora Morgan manifesto su esperanza de que el documental sobre Churchill contribuya a informar a las próximas generaciones. La película se proyectó al día siguiente en la AMIA, la institución destruida por un ataque terrorista en 1994, provocando la muerte de 85 personas y más de 300 heridos.
Al homenajear a la Royal British Legion en Argentina, Samuels se comprometió a que el Centro Wiesenthal “recopilará la historia oral de los veteranos, para educar a los jóvenes argentinos y británicos acerca de este capítulo poco conocido de la historia”.
Entre los invitados, dos de los veteranos argentinos (uno de ellos expiloto de la RAF – Royal Air Force) provocaron un momento muy emotivo, dado que se reencontraron por primera vez desde que partieron de Londres en la posguerra, en 1947.
También participaron en la recepción líderes de la oficina latinoamericana del Centro Simon Wiesenthal, encabezados por su Director regional, Sergio Widder.
