The US did the right thing - Cavallaro should never have been nominated in the first place. Anti-Semites in 2023 should never be nominated for positions of responsibly in our government much less in the field of human rights.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is urging the US State Department to withdraw Professor James Cavallaro for a commissioner’s post with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) – an agency within the OAS because of his use anti-Semitic tropes to describe House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Cavallaro also referred to Israel as an Apartheid state. The Algemeiner reports that Cavallaro Tweeted “Bought. Purchased. Controlled,” replying to a link to an article about the funds raised for Rep. Jeffries by AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups. The Tweet has since been deleted.

“The State Department should immediately withdraw this nominee for a key human rights post in the OAS. We don’t need an extreme ideologue who slanders one of the most important, respected, and trusted American politicians with his anti-Semitic tropes. Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries has earned the respect of Americans across the political and social spectrum,” said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, SWC Associate Dean and Global Social Action Director.
 
In a related development the Wiesenthal Center’s Latin American Director, Dr. Ariel Gelblung who serves as an advisor to the OAS Commissioner for Monitoring and Combatting Antisemitism, is urging Commissioner Dr. Fernando Lottenberg, to call upon the OAS to refuse to accept Cavallaro’s appointment. “The OAS cannot simultaneously fight anti-Semitism while allowing a bigot to serve on its Inter-American Commission on Human Rights,” said Dr. Gelblung.

El Centro Wiesenthal al Departamento de Estado de EE. UU.: Retire al candidato a la OEA que usó tropos antisemitas contra el líder de la minoría de la Cámara de Representantes Hakeem Jeffries

Cavallaro también se refirió a Israel como un estado de Apartheid. The Algemeiner informa que Cavallaro tuiteó “Comprado. Negociado. Controlado”, respondiendo a un enlace a un artículo sobre los fondos recaudados para el representante Jeffries por AIPAC y otros grupos pro-Israel. Desde entonces, el Tweet ha sido eliminado.

“El Departamento de Estado debería retirar de inmediato a este candidato para un puesto clave de derechos humanos en la OEA. No necesitamos un ideólogo extremista que calumnia a uno de los políticos estadounidenses más importantes, respetados y confiables con sus tropos antisemitas. El líder de la minoría Hakim Jeffries se ha ganado el respeto de los estadounidenses en todo el espectro político y social”, dijo el Rabino Abraham Cooper, Decano asociado de Centro Simon Wiesenthal y Director de Acción Social Global.

A su vez, el Director para América Latina del Centro Wiesenthal, el Dr. Ariel Gelblung, quien se desempeña como asesor del Comisionado de la OEA para el Monitoreo y la Lucha contra el Antisemitismo, ha instado al Comisionado Dr. Fernando Lottenberg a pedirle a la OEA que se niegue a aceptar el nombramiento de Cavallaro. “La OEA no puede combatir el antisemitismo al mismo tiempo que permite que un fanático forme parte de su Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos”, dijo el Dr. Gelblung.
