On the eve of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development – Rio+20 (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, June 20-22), the Simon Wiesenthal Center urged all participating States to deny bilateral meetings to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, calling on all delegates to walk out when he takes the podium.

In a letter to Foreign Ministers, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Wiesenthal Center’s Director for International Relations) and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America and the Center’s Delegate to Rio+20) noted, “In the past, Ahmadinejad has abused the UN microphone to deny the Nazi Holocaust and express genocidal intent, in repeated calls for the destruction of a fellow member-state, the State of Israel.”

The letter continued: “The Iranian regime is a sponsor of international terrorism, indicted by Argentina for its role in the 1994 attack against the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires, which killed 85 and injured hundreds. This policy continues with its military support to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad’s crimes against his own people.”

“Ahmadinejad will use his presence at the Summit for bilateral meetings with to break the isolation imposed by the 5+1 group [China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Russia, United States]. We urge all delegations to refuse to meet with him so that they do not appear to endorse Iran’s nuclear designs,” stated Samuels.

“We call on all delegations to walk out when Ahmadinejad takes the floor. Latin America has an obligation to send a powerful message not only to Tehran, but to the rest of the world, showing its commitment to responsibility and world peace,” added Widder.

As an NGO with consultative status at ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council), the Simon Wiesenthal Center is participating in the Rio+20 Summit to maintain the focus on its environmental agenda and prevent its pollution in serving as a platform for hate.

Cumbre Rio+20: el Centro Wiesenthal urge a gobiernos latinoamericanos a rechazar encuentros con el presidente iraní Ahmadinejad y a retirarse del recinto cuando haga uso de la palabra

En vísperas de la Cumbre de las Naciones Unidas sobre Desarrollo Sustentable – Rio+20 (Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, 20-22 de junio), el Centro Simon Wiesenthal urgió a todos los Estados participantes en la misma a rechazar encuentros bilaterales con el presidente de Irán, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, y formuló un llamamiento para que los delegados abandonen el recinto cuando el mandatario iraní haga uso de la palabra.

En una carta dirigida a Cancilleres, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina y Delegado del Centro para Rio+20) señalaron que “en el pasado, Ahmadinejad ha hecho abuso del podio de las Naciones Unidas con el fin de negar el Holocausto nazi y promover una incitación al genocidio, a través de sus reiterados llamamientos para destruir a un país miembro de la comunidad internacional, el Estado de Israel”.
La carta agrega que “el régimen iraní patrocina el terrorismo internacional, y ha sido acusado por la justicia argentina por su responsabilidad en el ataque de 1994 contra la AMIA, en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, que provocó la muerte de 85 personas y centenares de heridos. Esta política continúa hasta el presente, a través del apoyo militar para los crímenes del dictador sirio Bashar al-Assad contra su propio pueblo”.

“Ahmadinejad aprovechará su presencia en la Cumbre para tratar de establecer encuentros bilaterales y romper el aislamiento impuesto por el grupo 5+1 [Alemania, China, Estados Unidos, Francia, Gran Bretaña, Rusia]. Urgimos a todas las delegaciones a rechazar tales reuniones, y evitar dar una imagen de apoyo a los anhelos nucleares iraníes”, manifestó Samuels.

“Convocamos a todos los delegados a retirarse del recinto cuando Ahmadinejad se encamine hacia el podio. América Latina tiene una obligación de enviar un poderoso mensaje no sólo a Teherán, sino al resto del mundo, acerca de su compromiso con la responsabilidad y la paz mundial”, agregó Widder.
