SWC Calls on Ecuador President to Apologize for Exclaiming “Heil Hitler”

Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa tweeted a response to one of his predecessor’s insults by proclaiming “Heil Hitler!” Former president, Osvaldo Hurtado, had called the current Chief of State “a Fascist”.

 

“Correa publicly celebrated his friendship with former Iranian President - serial Holocaust denier - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. He remains an intimate of the Tehran regime. Though his supporters claim his ‘Heil Hitler!’ as a sarcastic retort to the charge of Fascism, it shows at best a conscious insensitivity to the victims of the Nazis. Rather, in the context of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’ intimate neo-Nazi and Iranian Jihadist ties, such language may serve as a provocation that endorses anti-Semitic violence,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.

 

“During his visit to Argentina in December 2012, Correa similarly offended the victims of the 1994 AMIA Jewish Center bombing, which left 85 people dead and hundreds maimed. When asked about his friendship with the Iranian leadership -the main suspect in the blast- he responded that he knew the case, ‘but many more had died due to NATO attacks’. If he truly has any sensitivity for victims of oppression, he should not show contempt to the victims of the Nazis,” added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America.

 

“We call on Correa to publicly apologize forthwith for his offensive remarks,” concluded the Center’s officials.

El Centro Wiesenthal reclama al presidente de Ecuador que se disculpe por haber exclamado “Heil Hitler!”

El presidente ecuatoriano, Rafael Correa respondió con un tuit que proclamaba “Heil Hitler!” a un comentario de uno de sus predecesores. Durante una conferencia, el expresidente Osvaldo Hurtado, había calificado al actual Jefe de Estado como “un fascista”.

 

“Correa se vanaglorió púbicamente de su amistad con el expresidente iraní y negador serial del Holocausto, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Sigue siendo un aliado muy próximo de Teherán. Aunque sus seguidores alegan que su ‘Heil Hitler!” fue una réplica sarcástica a la acusación de fascista, muestra, cuanto menos, una consciente insensibilidad hacia las víctimas de los nazis. Más bien, en el contexto de la íntima relación entre el fallecido expresidente venezolano Hugo Chávez con neonazis y con yihadistas iraníes, ese lenguaje puede constituir una provocación que avala la violencia antisemita”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal.

 

“Durante una visita a Argentina en diciembre de 2012, Correa exhibió su desdén hacia las víctimas del ataque terrorista contra la AMIA, que provocó la muerte de 85 personas y centenares de heridos. Cuando se le preguntó acerca de su amistad con el régimen iraní –el principal sospechoso por ese atentado- respondió que conocía el caso, pero –agregó- ‘muchos más han muerto por causa de los ataque de la OTAN’. Si verdaderamente tiene alguna sensibilidad en favor de las víctimas de la opresión, no debería demostrar desprecio hacia las víctimas de los nazis”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

 

“Reclamamos que el presidente Correa se disculpe de manera inmediata por esos comentarios ofensivos”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
