Wiesenthal Center officials, in Buenos Aires, commended Argentine Football Association (AFA) President, Julio Grondona, for the rapid action following the Center’s protest against antisemitic slurs chanted by Chacarita Juniors Soccer Club fans in March 2012.
 In an unprecedented decision, the Disciplinary Court ruled that Chacarita Juniors would lose the points it had obtained in the match.
During the meeting, Dr. Shimon Samuels (the Center’s Director for International Relations) told AFA that “the Disciplinary Court’s ruling was fair, and should be adopted by sister associations around the world”.
“President Grondona agreed to act together with our Center to ensure that the Argentine model be applied to soccer, first in Latin America (through the regional CONMEBOL Federation) and then taken to FIFA globally. AFA’s positive reaction is very encouraging,” added Samuels.
“We have also begun preliminary discussions to involve the players, as the major vectors, to convey messages of tolerance and respect to all fans”, stated Sergio Widder, (the Center’s Director for Latin America).
Also present at the meeting on behalf of AFA, were Secretary General, Dr. Miguel Angel Silva, the President and Member of the Disciplinary Court, respectively Fernando Mitjans, and Judge Jorge Ballestero.

El Centro Wiesenthal y la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino acuerdan trabajar juntos para combatir el racismo y el antisemitismo en el fútbol

Directivos del Centro Simon Wiesenthal se reunieron en Buenos Aires con el Presidente de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA), Julio Grondona, y elogiaron la rápida reacción luego de la protesta del Centro debido a los cantos antisemitas de simpatizantes del club Chacarita Juniors, en marzo de 2012.
En una sanción sin precedentes, el Tribunal de Disciplina dispuso que Chacarita Juniors fuera penalizado con la quita de los puntos obtenidos en el partido contra Atlanta.
Durante el encuentro, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) manifestó al Presidente de AFA que “la decisión del Tribunal de Disciplina es justa, y debería ser adoptada por asociaciones hermanas alrededor del mundo”.
“El Presidente Grondona estuvo de acuerdo en trabajar junto con nuestro Centro para asegurar que el modelo de Argentina se aplique en el fútbol, primero en América Latina (a través de la federación regional CONMEBOL) y luego elevado a nivel global a través de la FIFA. La reacción favorable de AFA es muy estimulante”, agregó Samuels.
“Hemos iniciado también conversaciones preliminares para involucrar a los propios jugadores, como principales transmisores, para que el mensaje en favor de la tolerancia y el respeto llegue a todos los simpatizantes”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.
En la reunión estuvieron presentes, también, en representación de AFA, el Secretario General Dr. Miguel Angel Silva, el Presidente del Tribunal de Disciplina y otro miembro del mismo, Esc. Fernando Mitjans, y el Juez Jorge Ballestero, respectivamente.
