The Simon Wiesenthal Center deplored that the Third South American – Arab Countries Summit –ASPA- (Lima, Peru, 1-2 October) lost an opportunity to adopt a serious commitment to peace in the Middle East.
“Our Center has been closely monitoring the ASPA process since its beginning in Brasilia, in 2005. In that time, we  protested the ambiguous language in addressing terrorism. A mix of condemnation and acceptance of the ‘right to resistance’ provided a euphemism for groups like Hamas and Hizbollah to disguise their terrorist nature. At the Lima meeting, most participants advocated recognition of a Palestinian State, while ignoring an explicit recognition of Israel’s right to exist within secure borders,” said Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America and its delegate to the ASPA Summit, (pictured).
“This forum has defended the right to peaceful nuclear development, but by not condemning the Iranian nuclear genocidal plan, it has implicitly endorsed Tehran. The position taken on Assad’s crimes against his own people was shamefully weak. ASPA claims to promote ‘dialogue and peaceful negotiations’, but did not condemn the Syrian tyrant. Paradoxically, the strongest advocates of the Damascus regime are South American: the ALBA bloc countries, led by Hugo Chavez.”
“We regret that ASPA, once again, lost an opportunity to contribute a true commitment to peace in the Middle East,” concluded Widder.

“Cumbre América del Sur – Países Arabes elude pronunciamientos serios sobre la paz en Medio Oriente”
Lima, 2 de octubre de 2012
El Centro Simon Wiesenthal lamentó que la 3ª Cumbre América del Sur – Países Arabes –ASPA-, reunida en Lima los días 1 y 2 de octubre de 2012, dejara pasar la oportunidad de adoptar un compromiso serio con la paz en Medio Oriente.
“Nuestro Centro sigue con atención el proceso ASPA desde sus inicios en Brasilia, en 2005. En ese momento protestamos debido al lenguaje ambiguo en relación con el terrorismo. Una mezcla de condena y de reconocimiento al ‘derecho a la resitencia’ ofreció un eufemismo para que grupos como Hamas y Hezbollah encubrieran su naturaleza terrorista. En la reunión de Lima la mayoría de los participantes abogó por el reconocimiento a un Estado Palestino, al tiempo que se ignoró un reconocimiento explícito del derecho de Israel a existir dentro de fronteras seguras”, señaló Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro y su delegado en la Cumbre ASPA.
“Este foro defendió el derecho al desarrollo nuclear con fines pacíficos; decir eso sin condenar los planes nucleares genocidas iraníes es un aval implícito a Teherán. La posición asumida en relación con los crímenes de Bashar Al Assad contra su propio pueblo fue vergonzosamente débil. ASPA dice promover una ‘solución pacífica y dialogada’, pero no ha condenado al tirano sirio. Paradójicamente, los defensores más fervientes del régimen de Damasco son sudamericanos: los países del bloque ALBA, que lidera Hugo Chávez”.
“Lamentamos que ASPA perdiera una nueva oportunidad para contribuir de modo sincero con la paz en Medio Oriente”, concluyó Widder.
