Simon Wiesenthal Center’s 2017 Digital Terrorism & Hate Report Card: Social Media Giants Fail to Curb Online Extremism

What: The Simon Wiesenthal Center will release its 2017 Digital Terrorism and Hate Report at a press conference with New York City Comptroller, Scott M. Stringer.

When: 11:30am Tuesday morning March 28, at 1 Centre Street, 5th Floor South, New York, NY 10007

Who: Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean, Simon Wiesenthal Center, Founder of Digital Terrorism and Hate Project and Rick Eaton, Senior Researcher will unveil the 2017 Social Media Report Card and a brief Powerpoint on the annual study, with a special focus on the recent deadly attack in London and the online emergence of extremists the Alt-right. New York City Comptroller Stringer will be the first public official to receive the report (which will also be released online).

The Wiesenthal Center will also announce its launch of Tools for Tolerance for Teens that will be available for New York City High Schools to teach young people how to deal with the tsunami of bigotry, racism, anti-Semitism and terrorism targeting young people worldwide. The launch of this project is made possible by a grant from RBC.

“We are grateful that Comptroller Stringer will be hosting this report”, said Rabbi Cooper. “Last week’s horrific attack at The House of Commons—targeting a historic symbol of democracies did not happen in a vacuum. The Social Media giants have thus far failed to curb the online marketing campaigns of hate and terror, leaving us all at greater risk. Moving forward we will need to build a strong public-private consortium to stop the hate and will be looking to leaders like Comptroller Stringer to help us build a broad-based coalition, moving forward.”
