Recidivist Arson at Brazilian Synagogue Where Antisemitism and Anti-Zionism Meet

In the early hours of May 17, the synagogue in the city of Pelotas, State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, was deliberately set on fire. This was not an isolated incident, but the continuation of four previous acts of vandalism in the last 6 months.

The State Governor, Jose Ivo Sartori, declared seemingly not to mince words, claiming that " investigations are taken seriously, nevertheless, they perhaps need more effort"

The messages left by the miscreants included:

-the threat of a forthcoming "international intifada", to support the struggle of the Palestinian people, wrapped up with calls to free Lula (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva) from prison based on corruption charges.

"It would seem that the persistent synagogue attacks are politically motivated to transplant the Middle East conflict against a tiny Jewish community in Brazil, it is there that antisemitism and anti-Zionism meet ", argued Dr. Shimon Samuels, the Centre's Director for International Relations.

Dr. Ariel Gelblung, Simon Wiesenthal Center`s Latin America Representative, expressing his utmost concern about the event, added: "We hope that the political and judicial authorities will take relevant measures. The repetition and escalation of these attacks were ignored,one by one, encouraging further such attacks, granting impunity to the perpetrators "

Antisionismo y Antisemitismo Confluyen en el Incendio Intencional a una Sinagoga en Brasil

Buenos Aires y París, 31 de mayo de 2018

En las primeras horas del 17 de mayo, la sinagoga en la ciudad de Pelotas, estado de Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, fue incendiada deliberadamente. Éste no fue un incidente aislado, sino la continuación de cuatro actos de vandalismo previos que han tenido lugar en los últimos 6 meses.

El gobernador del estado, José Ivo Sartori, afirmó sin rodeos que "las investigaciones se toman en serio, sin embargo, tal vez requieran de un mayor empeño".

Los mensajes que dejaron los perpetradores incluyeron:

- la amenaza de una próxima "intifada internacional" en apoyo de la lucha del pueblo palestino

- llamadas a la liberación de Lula (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) de la cárcel por cargos de corrupción.

"Al parecer los persistentes ataques contra la sinagoga están políticamente motivados en la idea de trasladar el conflicto del Medio Oriente en contra de una pequeña comunidad judía en Brasil, y allí es donde confluyen el antisemitismo y el antisionismo", argumentó el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro.
