The Simon Wiesenthal Center harshly criticized the statement made by Palestinian Foreign Minister, Riyad al-Maliki, at the plenary session of the Rio+20 Summit on Sustainable Development.
Exploiting a gathering on global water problems, agriculture, afforestation, green economy and biodiversity, the Palestinian Chief Delegate declared that “no sustainable development can be achieved under occupation and colonialism,” claiming East Jerusalem as the "capital of Palestine” - “the refugees’ right of return” and “the pre-1967 borders”.
Attacking “the Israeli policy of Judaization of Jerusalem, the construction of an apartheid wall, and its  destruction of the Two-State solution,” al-Maliki called for the “end of an occupation that prevents free movement and has cost the Palestinians US $7 billion per year”, ending his speech with “visit Palestine, visit Jerusalem.”
“This Durban-style language, of over a decade ago, is hardly new. They were spoilers at the 2002 Sustainable Development Summit in Johannesburg. Once again, instead of using smart diplomacy to show cooperation with Israel on those objectives of the conference vital to both peoples, the Palestinians care only for short term brownie points. Their strategy is clearly to use the entire UN system to obliterate the Two-State solution and forestall all efforts by Israel and the international community to secure a lasting peace,” argued Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center.
“Here in Rio de Janeiro, the Palestinians are again hijacking an international conference for their own agenda, to repeat their anti-Israeli mantra. An environmental Summit has been polluted with toxic rhetoric. By denying Jerusalem’s Jewish identity and calling for the ‘return of the refugees’ — issues irrelevant to this forum — they are really here to promote the dissolution of the Jewish State,” added Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America and its Delegate to the Rio+20 Summit.

“El discurso oficial de la delegación palestina en Rio+20 repite un mantra para secuestrar la Cumbre sobre Desarrollo Sustentable: las negociaciones de paz no figuran en su agenda”

EL Centro Simon Wiesenthal criticó de manera enérgica el discurso del ministro de Relaciones Exteriores palestino, Riyad al-Maliki, ante el plenario de la Cumbre sobre Desarrollo Sustentable Rio+20.
Aprovechándose de la audiencia de una reunión dedicada a los problemas mundiales del agua, la  agricultura, forestación, economía verde y biodiversidad, el Jefe de la delegación palestina declaró que “no es posible lograr el desarrollo sustentable bajo condiciones de ocupación y colonialismo”, reivindicó a “Jerusalem oriental como la capital de Palestina”, el “’derecho al retorno’ de los refugiados”, y abogó por “las fronteras previas a junio de 1967”.
Más adelante atacó “la política israelí de judaización de Jerusalem, la construcción de un muro de apartheid y su destrucción de la solución de dos estados”, y llamó a “poner fin a una ocupación, que impide la libre circulación y tiene un costo anual para los palestinos equivalente a 7.000 millones de dólares”. Concluyó su discurso con una invitación: “vengan a visitar Palestina, vengan a visitar Jerusalem”.
“Este lenguaje con el estilo de Durban, de hace más de una década, no es novedoso. Ya habían arruinado la Cumbre sobre Desarrollo Sustentable de Johannesburg en 2002. Una vez más, en lugar de utilizar una diplomacia astuta y mostrar voluntad de cooperación con Israel en aquellos objetivos de la Conferencia que son vitales para ambos pueblos, los palestinos sólo se preocuparon por migajas de corto plazo. Es claro que su estrategia es utilizar todo el sistema de las Naciones Unidas para obstruir la solución de dos estados e impedir que prosperen los esfuerzos de Israel y la comunidad internacional para asegurar una paz duradera”, manifestó el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal.
“Aquí, en Rio de Janeiro, los palestinos pretenden otra vez secuestrar una conferencia internacional para satisfacer su propia agenda y repetir su mantra anti-israelí. La Cumbre ambiental ha sido contaminada con su retórica tóxica. Al negar la identidad judía de Jerusalem y abogar por ‘el retorno de los refugiados’ –asuntos irrelevantes para este foro- pretenden, en realidad, promover la disolución del Estado judío”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina y Delegado del Centro en la Cumbre Rio+20.
