JEWISH & CHRISTIAN LEADERS UNITE TO URGE DISCIPLES OF CHRIST CONVENTION TO DROP RESOLUTION AGAINST ISRAEL ANTI-TERROR FENCE Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams will join officials of the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Christian leaders from across the U.S. at a press conference to urge delegates to next week’s Disciples of Christ Convention in Portland to defeat a resolution calling on Israel to dismantle its anti-terrorism fence. "In wake of the terrorist outrages in London and last week’s suicide bombing at a shopping mall in Israel, this resolution sends the wrong message, at the wrong time, to the wrong people," said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Wiesenthal Center. "Now is the time for all people of good faith to unite behind an unambiguous commitment against all terrorism, whoever the victim, whatever the cause," Cooper added. Wiesenthal Center officials are urging that the convention delegates instead urge governments to treat all suicide bombings as ‘Crimes against Humanity.’ The press briefing will be held Monday, July 25 at 11:30 AM at the Doubletree Hotel Portland-Lloyd Center 1000 NE Multnomah, Portland. Scheduled for the briefing are: Wiesenthal Center officials Rabbi Abraham Cooper and Rabbi Yitzchok Adlerstein; Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams; Reverend Dr. Steve Monhollen, Field Education Director, Lexington Theological Seminary, Kentucky; Reverend David James Brown, Pastor of the Midway Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Kentucky; Mark Tooley, Institute for Religion and Democracy, Washington, D.C.; and a survivor of a suicide terrorist attack in Israel. For more information, please contact the Center's Public Relations Department, 310-553-9036. Rabbi Cooper can be reached directly at 310-210-9750. |
