Wiesenthal Center Condemns Violent Attack

During Commemoration of Israel’s Anniversary in Buenos Aires

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned the violent attack by a group named “Revolutionary Action Front”, who broke into a celebration of Israel’s anniversary organized by the Buenos Aires Town Hall.

According to press reports and witnesses who were at the celebration, a gang of some ten people suddenly appeared and started beating the participants and destroyed a Judaica sales stand. Five members of the group were arrested and taken in custody.

“This attack represents, in a minor scale, the logic of violence in the Middle East: while there are people celebrating life and freedom, antisemitic groups who do not accept the right for Jewish self-determination produce these virulent incidents”, said Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Director).

“Since five members of the gang were arrested, we expect that authorities will establish who ordered such attack. We also congratulate the Buenos Aires Town Hall for their initiative to celebrate Israel’s anniversary and propose that this will be established as an annual tradition in honor of the friendship between Argentina and Israel”, concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó el ataque violento por parte de un grupo denominado “Frente de Acción Revolucionaria” durante una celebración del aniversario del Estado de Israel, organizado por el gobierno de la ciudad de Buenos Aires bajo el lema “Buenos Aires celebra a Israel”.

De acuerdo a reportes periodísticos y testigos presentes en el acto, un grupo de una decena de forajidos irrumpió repentinamente, golpeando a los asistentes y destrozando un stand de venta de artículos judaicos. Cinco agresores fueron arrestados.

“Este ataque representa, en escala menor, un claro ejemplo de cómo es la lógica de la violencia en Medio Oriente: la celebración de la vida y la libertad es quebrantada por la irrupción de grupos antisemitas que no aceptan el derecho a la autodeterminación judía”, señalaron el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina).

“En virtud de que algunos agresores han sido arrestados, esperamos que se esclarezca a quién responden. Asimismo, felicitamos al Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires por la iniciativa de la celebración, y anhelamos que se instituya como una tradición anual en honor de la amistad entre la Argentina y el Estado de Israel”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
