Help Teach Youth About the Holocaust

Almost 50 years after World War II, many young people from the former communist countries have little to no knowledge of the Holocaust.

As one of the leading organizations in the world teaching the lessons and preserving the memory of the Holocaust, it became clear to the Simon Wiesenthal Center that these youth needed to be engaged and educated.

Under the auspices of the Simon Wiesenthal Center’s Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director of International Relations, together with France’s Association Verbe et Lumiere-Vigilance and Russia’s Holocaust Centre, a Holocaust essay contest for university students from the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries was launched sixteen years ago.

The success of this program has been overwhelming. From 21 submissions in the first year to over 2,000 today, students engage in researching and teaching the Holocaust for years to come.

Winners are brought to UNESCO’s headquarters to present their research findings and winning papers. While in Paris, the students meet with Holocaust survivors, journalists and community leaders to gain further knowledge and understanding.
