DEMJANJUK FORMALLY CHARGED IN GERMANY WITH MURDER OF 27,900 JEWS

"Demjanuk participated in helping to end the lives of thousands of innocent Jews...justice will finally prevail"

Convicted Nazi guard John Demjanjuk was formally charged in Germany with being an accessory to the murder of 27,900 Jews at the Sobibor death camp in Poland.

"The Simon Wiesenthal Center welcomes today's decision to formally indict John Demjanuk", said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's dean and founder.

The German Press Association reported that Demjanjuk was formally accused of having been a guard at Sobibor, where he allegedly drove thousands of victims into gas chambers. His name also appears on list from 1943 showing that he was transferred to Sobibor. And, an SS identification is part of the evidence against Demjanjuk .

"From March of 1943, Demjanuk participated every day in helping to end the lives of thousands of innocent Jews. We have every confidence that justice will finally prevail," Hier concluded.
