Chile’s Palestine Football Club Uniform Wipes Israel off the Map – Wiesenthal Center Urges Penalty

“Football should build bridges for coexistence. Not promote the elimination of the other”



In a letter to Sergio Jadue (President of the Chilean National Football Association – ANFP in Spanish) and Oscar Fuentes Márquez (Executive Secretary), the Simon Wiesenthal Center called for its Palestine football club to pay a penalty for its new season t-shirts featuring the entire map of the State of Israel as Palestine (see photo).

Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations stated, “By wiping out the State of Israel through sport, Palestino FC not only transplants a foreign conflict to Chilean soil, it is inciting hatred among the large Arab community in Chile.”

Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America added, “Last August, we presented ANFP with our ’11 Points Against Racism in Football’ program, resulting in a commitment to strive together to contain hate and violence on the football terraces, so that ‘the beautiful sport’ may serve as a tool to build bridges, not to exclude or eliminate the other.”

“We call on ANFP to investigate and impose a penalty on Palestino Club for fomenting a terrorist intent,” concluded the Center’s officials.

La nueva camiseta del club Palestino, de Chile, elimina a Israel del mapa –
El Centro Wiesenthal solicita una sanción

“El fútbol debe tender puentes a favor de la coexistencia, no promover la eliminación del otro”

Buenos Aires, 6 de enero de 2014

En una carta a Sergio Jadue (Presidente de la Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional de Chile – ANFP) y a Oscar Fuentes Márquez (Secretario Ejecutivo), el Centro Simon Wiesenthal reclamó que se sancionara al club Palestino de fútbol debido a que el nuevo diseño de sus camisetas presenta un mapa que comprende la totalidad del Estado de Israel como si fuera Palestina (foto adjunta).

El Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) señaló que “al eliminar al Estado de Israel por medio del deporte, el club Palestino no sólo transplanta un conflicto foráneo a territorio chileno, sino que incita al odio a una extensa comunidad árabe en Chile”.

Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina del Centro) agregó que “en agosto de 2013 presentamos ante la ANFP nuestro programa de ‘11 Puntos contra el Racismo en el Fútbol’, y coincidimos en el compromiso de un esfuerzo conjunto para contener el odio y la violencia en los estadios, para que ‘el juego maravilloso’ pueda servir como una herramienta para construir puentes de acercamiento en lugar de excluir o eliminar al otro”.

“Solicitamos que la ANFP intervenga y sancione al club Palestino por fomentar un propósito terrorista”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
