Chile President Misrepresented by Regional Government Official at Gaza Solidarity Rally Claiming “President Bachelet Supports the Palestinian Cause”

The Simon Wiesenthal Center protested the statement of a Chilean Regional Housing official, Romina Tuma, to a pro-Hamas rally, publicly defining ‘President Bachelet as a supporter of the Palestinian cause’. She remained present at a burning of the Israeli flag.

Tuma is the daughter of Senator Eugenio Tuma, whose anti-Semitic exclamations have been denounced by the Wiesenthal Center (see http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=8486393&ct=13379953#.U9KvQPl5P_E).

In a letter to President Michelle Bachelet, Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations and Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America, expressed their concern at the misappropriation of her name and status.

“This would constitute a serious abuse of Tuma’s public functions, intervening in Chilean foreign policy regarding a friendly state, with the intent to damage Chilean-Israeli relations. For this behavior, she deserves to be immediately dismissed from her government employ. Delegate Tuma’s assertion that she attended the rally as a private citizen cannot be sustained as she claimed to be speaking on behalf of the Chief of State,” argued Samuels and Widder.

“Neither Chile, nor President Michelle Bachelet, deserve to be identified with the manipulation employed by Romina Tuma,” concluded the Center’s officials.

Chile: Secretaria Regional Ministerial se apropia de la representatividad de la Presidenta de Chile al manifestar que “la Presidenta Bachelet apoya la causa palestina” durante de una manifestación en solidaridad con Gaza

“El contexto de las declaraciones de Romina Tuma, orientadas a perjudicar las relaciones chileno-israelíes, la convierten en una defensora del terrorismo de Hamas y, por lo tanto, merecedora de expulsión de la función pública”

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal elevó una protesta al gobierno de Chile debido a la participación de la Secretaria Regional Ministerial (Seremi) de Vivienda para la Araucanía, Romina Tuma, en una manifestación callejera a favor de Hamas, durante la cual expresó que “la Presidenta Bachelet apoya la causa palestina”. Tuma se mantuvo presente durante la quema de la bandera israelí.

La Seremi Tuma es hija del Senador Eugenio Tuma, cuyas declaraciones antisemitas han sido denunciadas por el Centro Wiesenthal (ver http://www.wiesenthal.com/site/apps/nlnet/content2.aspx?c=lsKWLbPJLnF&b=8486393&ct=13379953#.U9KvQPl5P_E)

En una carta a la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina), transmitieron su preocupación debido a la malversación de su nombre y su investidura.

“Este caso representa un serio abuso de las atribuciones de Tuma, interfiriendo en la política exterior de Chile en relación con un país amigo con la intención de perjudicar las relaciones chileno-israelíes. Tal comportamiento merece su inmediata expulsión de la función pública. El descargo de la Seremi Tuma de que asistió a la manifestación en carácter privado carece de sustento, en tanto ella afirmó haber hablado en nombre de la Jefa de Estado”, señalaron Samuels y Widder.

“Ni Chile ni la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet merecen quedar identificados con esta maniobra manipuladora de Romina Tuma”, concluyeron los directivos del Centro.
