A Timely Chanukah Greeting from Rabbi Marvin Hier, Founder and Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center

December 10, 2020

We are living in one of the most challenging times in both world and American history. The pandemic has dramatically changed our family's lives. As difficult as it may be, each of us has an obligation to bolster our faith. The commemoration of Chanukah gives us that opportunity. It reminds us that if our turbulent past, culminating in the tragedy of the Holocaust did not diminish our faith, neither will this pandemic.

As Winston Churchill told the British people as the bombs began falling on London, “You must remember that we are no longer alone… the whole future of mankind may depend upon our conduct. So far we have not failed. And we shall not fail now. Let us move forward steadfastly together into the storm."

As we light the Chanukah candles, let us restore our faith – with the words of the psalmist, “Those that sow in tears shall yet reap in joy."

Wishing you and your families a Happy Chanukah,

Rabbi Marvin Hier
Simon Wiesenthal Center Founder and Dean
