Appointment of Buenos Aires Police Chief Tainted by Behavior After AMIA Terror Attack




The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned the appointment of Jorge Palacios as the Chief of the new Buenos Aires Metropolitan Police.

In a letter to Minister of Justice and Security of Buenos Aires Town Hall, Guillermo Montenegro, the Center’s Director for Latin America, Sergio Widder, reminded that “Chief Palacios was involved in the less transparent period of the investigation of the AMIA bombing, and accusations of covering up are pending against him.”

“To appoint someone like Palacios as the first Chief of the new Metropolitan Police shows not only a lack of respect to the memory of the victims of the AMIA bombing, but also sends  a message of impunity for the members of the force. They are basically being told that going against the rule of law and proper procedures can be a passport to leadership in the force,” said the Center’s official.

“Only a few weeks after the Argentine Supreme Court’s indictment, which confirmed the irregularities under the period when Palacios was part of the Amia investigation team and emphasized the need of serving justice in this case, the Buenos Aires Town Hall makes a mockery of those sentiments and all efforts to obtain justice for Amia' victims,” he added.

“We urge that Palacios’ appointing as Chief of the Metropolitan Police be reconsidered.  His confirmation would mean disrespect to the victims of the AMIA bombing and their families and the basis for further impunity,” Widder concluded.

No al Palacio(s) de la Impunidad en la ciudad de Buenos Aires


El Centro Simon Wiesenthal repudió el nombramiento del comisario Jorge Palacios al frente de la nueva Policía Metropolitana de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires.

En una carta al Ministro de Justicia y Seguridad porteño, Guillermo Montenegro, el Director para América Latina, Sergio Widder recordó que “el comisario Jorge Palacios, estuvo vinculado a la etapa menos transparente de la investigación del atentado contra la AMIA, y pesan sobre su persona acusaciones de encubrimiento que han impedido, hasta el momento, la resolución del ataque terrorista más grave cometido en la República Argentina”.

“Designar a una persona como el comisario Palacios como el primer titular de la nueva Policía Metropolitana constituye no sólo una falta de respeto a la memoria de las víctimas del atentado contra la AMIA sino un mensaje de impunidad para los integrantes de dicha fuerza. Se les estará inculcando que el accionar contra la ley y el estado de derecho puede resultar un pasaporte para ascender a la pirámide jerárquica de la fuerza”, señaló el directivo del Centro Wiesenthal.

“A pocas semanas del categórico pronunciamiento de la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación, que confirmó las irregularidades ocurridas bajo el período durante el cual el comisario Palacios integró el equipo investigador y aleccionó a la sociedad acerca del valor de que este caso no permanezca impune, la decisión del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires se contrapone con el espíritu del máximo tribunal argentino”, agregó.

“Demandamos que la designación del comisario Palacios a cargo de la Policía Metropolitana quede sin efecto; lo opuesto significaría una muestra de escaso respeto de parte del Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires por las víctimas del ataque contra la AMIA, sus familiares y sus allegados. Representaría, en definitiva, la construcción de un Palacio(s) de la impunidad”, concluyó Widder.
