Anti-Semitic Argentine Newscaster Fired Following SWC Protests

“For the last week, Argentine News Channel Crónica granted prime time to Santiago Cúneo - a ‘journalist’ who dedicated his program to defaming the Jewish community and its leaders (DAIA), the State of Israel, women and the current government,” noted Dr. Shimon Samuels and Dr. Ariel Gelblung, respectively the Centre’s Director for International Relations and its Representative for Latin America.

Cúneo’s comments included:

- “We are building a gigantic majority to terminate these miserable rats, this pro-American and Israeli government.”

- “My greatest contempt is for you (Argentine President) Mauricio Macri, and absolute contempt for the band of delinquents that surround you, including the (Jewish) leaders of DAIA.”

- “...who the hell are you? Argentines of the Jewish religion or Israelis. Clarify this before we take off. Is it clear"... "So when this nice DAIA signs [a press release], say what the hell you are: an Argentine who professes the Jewish religion or an Israeli citizen who defends interests that are not those of the Argentine nation.”

“Cúneo spreads his hate through ferocious antisemitism by reviving a 1970s neo-Nazi libellous screed, ‘the Andean Plan’ conspiracy, to found a Jewish state in Patagonia and dehumanizes the Jewish leadership as ‘rats’ - the language of Nazism,” stressed Gelblung.

Samuels had demanded that "Crónica Television fire Cúneo forthwith... Any media that retains this hatemonger will be deemed an associate to his incitement and co-responsible for the consequences.”

Within hours of the Centre’s statement, the channel announced that Cúneo was dismissed, continuing, “the newscaster distorted information into a ‘bastard journalism’. In applauding Crónica’s decision, the Centre argued that, “Media is a weapon. Just as armed forces would fire a serviceman for misuse of his weapon, so news companies are responsible for the use and misuse of their air-waves... Crónica TV has shown it will not lend itself to transmit hate and violence.”

Santiago Cúneo fue despedido por el Canal de Noticias Argentino Crónica TV a horas de la Carta Abierta difundida por el Centro Wiesenthal

El Centro Wiesenthal exigió que Cúneo fuera despedido de inmediato y proclamó que cualquier empresa que conserve a este propagador de odio será percibida como asociada a su incitación y corresponsable de sus consecuencias.

Durante la última semana el canal de noticias argentino Crónica TV otorgó el carácter de editorialista en horario central de su programación a Santiago Cúneo, quien dedicó su programa a difamar a la Comunidad Judía y sus líderes (DAIA), el Estado de Israel, las mujeres y el actual gobierno” señalaron los Dres. Shimon Samuels y Ariel Gelblung, respectivamente Director de Relaciones Internacionales y Representante para América Latina del Centro.

Los comentarios de Cúneo incluyeron:

-“Construyamos una gigantesca mayoría popular para terminar con estas ratas miserables, este gobierno pro americano e israelí”

-“Mi más profundo desprecio, Mauricio Macri, para vos y absoluto desprecio para toda la caterva de delincuentes que te rodea, incluidos los directivos de la DAIA”

-“…Qué carajo son Uds.? Argentinos de religión judía o israelitas? Aclárenlo antes de arrancar. Queda claro?”…”Entonces, está bueno DAIA que cuando firmás (un comunicado) digas qué carajo sos: un argentino que profesa una religión o un ciudadano israelita que defiende otros intereses que no son los de la Nación Argentina”.

“Cúneo diseminó su odio por medio de un feroz antisemitismo sosteniendo la veracidad del Plan Andinia, libelo nazi de los años ´70 que denuncia una conspiración para crear un estado judío en la Patagonia. También utilizando el más puro lenguaje del nazismo, deshumanizó a la Comunidad Judía tratándola de ratas” sostuvo Gelblung.

Samuels exigió a Crónica TV “que Cúneo fuera despedido de inmediato. Cualquier empresa que conserve a este propagador de odio será percibida como asociada a su incitación y corresponsable de sus consecuencias”

A pocas horas de la Carta Abierta del Centro, el Canal anunció a través de un comunicado que Cúneo había sido despedido y que “...lo que el conductor ha conseguido es distorsionar la información, bastardear al periodismo…En la línea editorial (de Crónica)… prevalece el respeto.” (https://www.infobae.com/politica/2018/05/18/finalmente-santiago-cuneo-se-fue-de-cronica-tv/)

El Centro celebró la decisión de Crónica arguyendo que “Un medio de comunicación es un arma. Así como las fuerzas de seguridad despedirían a un agente por utilizar su armamento indebidamente, una empresa periodística es responsable por el uso que sus dependientes dan a su pantalla. Crónica lo vió de esta forma y no se prestó a que su medio transmita odio y violencia.”
